Wife Of Disabled Husband Seeks Grant Money For Medical Debt Relief

by Samantha
(Moneta, VA, USA)

I am 32 years old and married to a great man who is disabled. We have four children, two are still in elementary school and the oldest two have graduated.

In September of 2009, Eric was in an accident that left him paralyzed. This life altering accident has not stopped us from trying to make the best of what we face I life.

Recently Eric was denied Medicaid because Social Services told us his disability income was too much. Considering we can't pay are bills with what income we do have, I was shocked.

His medical expenses are very high and I am afraid of what life will be like in the months to come. I have the choice to pay for medical supplies or rent and food.

I am unable to work because Eric needs care around the clock. He cannot move his legs, feet, hands, or fingers. He needs help with every daily living activity there is.

Eric also suffers from Autonomic Dysreflexia, which results in headaches, sweating, and very high blood pressure. This happens at least twice a week.

We need help with medical supplies and some kind of transportation.

We cannot go out with my husband because we do not have a van big enough for his wheelchair.

Our family adventures are limited to our singlewide trailer and the yard around us.

My family and I are looking for a grant that helps out a family with a disabled parent and low income.

Social Services for Medical Care
by: Anonymous

I am in a similar situation with a young disabled husband and child in elementary school. We were also denied government assistance because our income was slightly over the limit for a 3-person family. We continue to pay $1000/month in medical expenses. And we are the fortunate ones?

I did hear that some government programs will pay for in-house nursing care and that YOU can apply to receive this amount if you are taking care of your spouse instead of hiring care. Unfortunately, it is really not much. But you might check it out.

I would go back to your local social services and explain to them once again what is going on. Then keep going back every couple weeks. Sometimes it just takes talking to the right person. You should at least be eligible for food stamps because you have young children.

I would also encourage you to become actively involved with writing your senators and congressmen about healthcare reform, and talking to others about it too. The cost of healthcare is devastating families dealing with chronic illnesses!! I'm talking about middle-class families who have worked hard every day since they were 15-16 years old and suddenly their lives are turned upside down by tragedy.

HEALTHCARE BASED UPON OUR JOBS DOES NOT WORK!!

IMO everyone deserves healthcare no matter what their station in life - whether they have a job or not. In our wealthy nation, no one should be without healthcare. No one should be forced to choose between providing a roof over their children's heads or receiving medical care. It is absolutely ridiculous. What few programs that are out there are not available to the middle class.

Sorry to say that a lot of people do not understand and do not realize that they are just one diagnosis away from being in our same situation. All they think is that they are OK right now and they shouldn't have to pay anything for others. These people really need to hear from us. We have to stand up for others who are in our situation.

I wish you the best of luck. I know it's hard. Hang in there!
