Wife Of Disabled Gulf War Veteran Seeks Housing Grant Money

by Pamela
(Mesa, AZ, USA)

My husband is a disabled gulf war veteran. He gets $1,400 a month. I applied for SSI for myself being I've been disabled eight years.

My husband worked till December 2008 and was the sole provider of our family. He paid $900 a month for insurance for our family. We barely made ends meet with just him working.

We bought a house with a VA grant. After he lost his job, he applied for public assistance.

After nine months SSI said I was disabled. I was so excited, thinking maybe we could get caught up. But because my husband gets $1,400 month unearned income I do not get my SSI even though they finally agreed I was disabled.

Our house is falling apart. The ceiling in one of the rooms is going to come down anytime soon. The garage and a family room added without a building permit. Things just keep getting worse. But it's our home and we're about to lose it.

I'm scared. We have a 10 year old we still need to raise. My husband has PTSD really bad. I suffer too. I lost my eldest son in 2007. He was in the army.

I know there are a lot of people much worse off than we are, but if we could just get ahead two months on our mortgage and some extra money to fix our house, it would make such a difference.

I don't want to lose our family unit. Our family is in counseling. My 10-year-old and our whole family (five children in all) have been through a lot.

Thank you for listening and for pointing us to potential sources of help. Pam.
