Widowed Single Mom Seeks Wheelchair Vehicle Grant For Two MD Disabled Sons

by Glenda
(Independence, MO, USA)

At the age of 49, I became a single parent with two disabled sons, both now in wheelchairs.

In May of 2008, my fiancé and son's father was shot and killed at our home.

I'm their primary caretaker and home schoolteacher and now, single mom.

My sons can't take care of any of their personal needs so I bathe them, help them with restroom needs and transfer them from one place to another.

Both sons have muscular dystrophy and cannot walk at all and are in wheelchairs.

I don't work since my sons need my full attention. We've been living off survivor benefits since their father's death.

By the end of the month the benefits run out since I don't work and have to pay rent, utilities, medication, food and any other personal needs my boys or I may have at the time.

I am in need of a wheelchair van or to have mine fixed. I don't have the money to get my van fixed to transport my sons, much less buy a used one. I just don't have enough income.

I get no assistance from family services because we make too much money according to them. Our income is $2216 a month. It does not last as long as I wish it would.

I have to borrow a car from family members or friends to run errands and the boys have to stay at home with my family member or friend I borrow the car from.

I have had them beg me to take them with me but the vehicles I borrow are not equipped for wheelchairs.

They do go outside on nice days but they ask to go out with me at other times, it breaks my heart when I have to tell them no.

We really need help. I would gladly accept a donated used van or a grant to help fix my van. I don't need anything fancy just reliable.

Please help my family. Anything would be a blessing! Thank you in advance for anything you can do for us.

The need for Independence in Independence
by: Ken

Hi Glenda,
I guess you have tried the bottom link to available grants. I will give you a couple more that you can copy and paste to your browser.

There is quite a lot of info they need but the next round of applicants begin fairly soon and follow the instructions carefully.

You may try this one too.

Maybe if you can find out how much it will cost to fix your van and let them know, probably send your letter as well.

Good luck,
Ken
