Vehicle And Other Grant Help For 100 Percent Heart Disabled USMC Veteran

by JL Brown
(Crawfordville, Florida, USA)

I am a 55-year-old disabled USMC veteran divorced from my wife. I have raised two daughters.

I was honorably discharged from the USMC in July of 1981. I served over six years of active duty.

In February of 1998 I was hospitalized at the VA Hospital, Lake City, Florida for 22 days for severe heart and other related health problems.

At this point I was diagnosed 100% disabled and was no longer able to do gainful employment. This was a shock to me.

I had been aware of what was treated as a "minor" heart condition by private HMO previously, and was devastated by the life changing effects I was now facing.

I now find myself in the situation that my vehicle needs approximately $2500 worth of repairs, and not even enough left over after paying bills each month to purchase food and utilities.

I am able to get assistance with the electricity once every six months, and I qualify for a whopping $16 of food stamps a month.

There are times when I go weeks without electricity and days that I only eat one sandwich a day.

All of this is an added burden to my kids who live hundreds of miles away with small kids of their own. One has cystic fibrosis, which is its own challenge, but they do try and help when they can.

I currently draw a VA Pension of $1021 a month. That's it. I can't work. It's a physical effort to check the mail or run errands.

I can tell you that when my health problems escalated I did have many assets. I have over the years slowly sold all assets off, and used all available outlets, in order to balance the budget. There's nohting left to sell.

Additionally, I would like to say that raising a child with cystic fibrosis can be expensive in itself because of co-pays (thank God we had insurance when she was born).

It was costly to provide a high calorie diet and trips of hundreds of miles to Shands Hospital four times a year. So over the years helping her has reduced any chance that I would have something put back for that "rainy day."

I need a grant that would fix the vehicle, and help with groceries and utilities for the next year or so. This would give me transportation and the time I need in order to square things away and be able to live/survive on my monthly income.

Too much to do, in little time.

Hi JL,

It's really a bad situation you're in now. Do you think you qualify for section 8? I have an address that you can copy and paste to your browser:

http://www.hud.gov/local/index.cfm?state=fl&topic=renting

It has some good information on it. Sometimes it is good to take on a smaller place to live, maybe with a subsidy, until you can get back on your feet. You may also want to see what these people have for information:

Good Luck and Happy New Year,
Ken
