US Army Veteran Seeks Grants And Benefits For Self And Disabled Wife
by Jason
(Waynesboro, VA, USA)
My name is Jason and I am 33 years old. I served nine years in the Army, straight out of high school.
My wife was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes at the age of three. She is now a brittle diabetic, and no longer able to work. We have our first child on the way.
Over the past few years her disease has worsened, causing complications, and making it impossible to work even part time.
Her health will most likely continue to deteriorate over time.
She now has nerve damage and diabetic eye disease, but eventually will experience blindness, kidney failure, heart disease and limb amputations.
Due to my wife's inability to work, we are now not able to pay for the mortgage, car payments, vehicle insurance, utilities, food, etc.
We can't afford medical insurance, and my wife cannot access Medicaid or Medicare through the government, because she is not disabled enough.
Her medications and medical supplies are close to $1,000 every month. We are not making it.
My wife applied for disability a year ago, when she realized she was unable to work any longer. Of course, she has been denied.
I am self-employed now in order to be able to monitor her regularly and be able to get to her at anytime in case something happens.
Going to work for someone else is not an option, as I need to be available to her at all times.
We need help in getting SSDI approved and Medicare started for my wife.
I am also looking for any advice on possible grants available to me as a veteran, and any benefits available to my family.
I've already started my business, and I'm just working on getting established. I don't feel that I'm in need of, or would qualify for any kind of business grant.
