Stroke Disabled Woman Seeks Government Grant For Bioness Stimulator
by Carolyn Hagman
(FL, USA)
In 1992 I had a stroke, which left my right side paralyzed. I had to learn to speak again. Through therapy I was talking and walking again.
Then after a couple of months my right foot and right/hand arm started turning inward.
My neurologist, Dr. Desmond Hussey III, NASA, in Naples, FL, diagnosed I had dystonia as a result of my stroke.
He put me on the proper medications and sent me to a foot doctor for my first foot brace. (AFO) It was a short one that fit into my shoe.
That did fine for a while and then progressively my right foot and my arm/hand started turning even more inward.
They put me in another brace (AFO) that went from my foot to just below my knee. Then they had to put a flair-out lift on the bottom of my shoe, in addition to my brace, because I was falling over.
Braces hurt!! They are very uncomfortable and they cause deep abrasions on my skin. My ankle is always fighting the brace and I could not wear it long due to the pain.
I went for Botox injections every six months and Dr. Michael Novak had to increase the injections to every four months because my spasms were so bad.
Botox was originally created for people that have severe spasms, like myself, as a result of dystonia. I receive injections every four months.
It works for a while but still my foot is always fighting the brace.
My prosthetics specialists, Victor Bustamante, LPO, from Mid-Florida Prosthetics just introduced me to the Bioness NESS L300. It is lightweight functional stimulation cuff.
I was totally amazed when I tried it. I could actually walk totally unassisted. The unit costs $6200 without accessories. Please review my case and grant me the money for the Bioness NESS L300.
I would be very appreciative of any financial assistance in getting available grants for a disabled person. I cannot afford it on my own.
