Stroke Disabled Woman Loses All And Seeks Grant Money For Better Life

by Barbara Stapleton
(Yonkers, NY, USA)

Me at my church a few months ago

In November 2005, while on vacation in NC, I suffered a stroke. It has left me severely disabled and in need of assistance.

I lost everything and had to live in a shelter. I had no medical care due to no medical coverage prior to this "vacation." It took me 10 months to get back to NY. I slept on folding church chairs.

Since then, I've had MANY health issues (hypertension, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, gout, two herniated disks, arthritic neck and spine, lower back mobility challenges, PAIN, and more.)

When I came back to NY in July 2007, I had NO food stamps for eight months due to a DSS worker's incompetence and computer glitches.

She kept putting my Pastor, the Signatory, as the Landlord, instead of the Landlord, my church, as was correctly entered on their form. The Church had the Vendor account with them.

I suffered horribly. Finally, in March 2008, I got a HUD apartment (project-based) but NO furniture or any other single thing to help me. DSS says I did not come from a legal shelter so I was ineligible for furniture/other assistance.

I DESPERATELY need furniture. I'm using a rented semi-electric hospital bed (cannot get up/down without it) but the rental has billing issues with Fidelis (Medicaid provider).

I need my own bed, dresser, lamp, etc. I have no dining table/chairs. I need a desk, chair, lamp, small file cabinet. I also need cook/bakeware. Al I have is a very old fry pan and a dollar store saucepan.

I also have debts (not credit cards) from the stroke on my credit report.

Please help me.

Resource Guide & Help Links :)

Thank you for sharing your story. It's heart breaking to learn that you are not able to receive assistance for furniture.

With today's current economy, many organizations are battling with funding. That doesn't mean help is not available, it's just a little harder finding it.

When searching for assistance available in New York, I came up with the following listings.

The Center for Aging New York has over 50 resource agency listings!
http://www.aging.ny.gov/NYSOFA/LocalOffices.cfm

Senior Citizen's Resource Guide
http://www.aging.ny.gov/ResourceGuide/index.cfm

One suggestion is to post an ad online at either Craigslist.com for your location, or a place that allows the creation of a free ad, such as Free Ad Forum.

When posting, put in the title of your advertisement: Furniture Needed Free, I wouldn't list about your disability or list your personal information to prevent issues of scamming and spamming.

Have you contacted any churches in the area?

One place that offers assistance for furniture is the Salvation Army; however this varies from city to city, and so do the guidelines.

Post a classified ad in the local newspaper. There is a cost for doing this. Sometimes there are free classified advertisements in community papers. You could call your local newspaper company and ask them if they know of one.

Take care,

Sincerely,
Katina from Accessible.org
