Single Mother Of Disabled Daughter Seeks Grant Money For New Transportation

by Laura Eaton
(Riverside, CA, USA)

Hello! My name is Laura and I am a 34-year-old single mom of four daughters. I'm looking for government grant money to help with transportation.

My third daughter was born with a birth defect called Spina Bifida. She is a paraplegic and wheelchair bound.

She also has other medical issues that need doctor monitoring. I have been caring for her on my own since her birth as well as my other girls.

I work part-full time, depending on the amount of hours that are available to me. I also receive S.S.I. for my daughter.

I am writing this today because my vehicle is 10 years old and on its last legs!

I have no way to afford a mechanic bill. I fear at any moment it will break down. If this were to happen I would lose my job and thus lose my house!

There would also be no way to get my daughter to her doctor appointments! Busing is not an option because I have to be at work before dawn, way before public buses are running!

My family moved out of state last year. So, I no longer have them to fall back on.

What would really be a blessing to me is to be able to buy a new small to medium size S.U.V. I believe I could get one for $22,000.

This would allow me to have room for my daughter's wheelchair, medical supplies, groceries and my three other daughters.

It would also help me get to and from work without the fear of my vehicle breaking down on the road!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for directing me to any government transportation grant money available to me as single mother with a disabled child.

Sincerely,
Laura Eaton

Transportation

I live in NYC and here you can contact the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, to obtain a Medical Waiver for your child. This waiver has a lot of benefits besides transportation.

Before you can apply for it you need to get your daughter evaluated. They would need three different types of evaluations. Depending on your county they will let you know what they are. Once they tell you ask them if they know of a center where you can have these evaluations done.

In NYC you can get the evaluations done in the Children's Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center. The specific name of the office where you can apply for the Medical Waiver is called Metro New York Developmental Disabilities Services Office. You can also Google the benefits of a Medical Waiver in your state.

Once you get the Medical Waiver I believe they can help you with a vehicle especially if your daughter is incapacitated. It can be done but it's a process.

I hope this helps!
