Single Mother of Autistic Boy Seeks Housing Grant Money For Better Home

by Tanis
(Maryland, USA)

Hello everyone. My name is Tanis Johnson and I'm a single mother of two. One is a 12-year-old boy who was diagnosed at the age of 2 years old with autism.

At first I thought it would be too much of a challenge for me but God gave me the strength.

Then 9 years later I gave birth to a healthy baby girl who is now 3 and doesn't understand what goes on with her brother when he flaps his hands, hums and becomes emotional at times for no apparent reason.

I have tried for several years to seek and find resources in my state, but there seems to be nothing.

I've been trying to figure out how to get some form of funding just to give my son some better living arrangements so he will feel safe and comfortable.

Where we live now we have no backyard and not too many places to go where he is not stared at or teased. And I know that's due to other people not having the knowledge or education of what autism is.

I just want him to be happy safe and comfortable. Thanks for listening.

Congratulations on making the effort to submit your story to Accessible.org.

With the publication of your story, you are now well on your way to:

1. Getting your story known to a wide audience that could help you.

2. Getting your story polished up and presentable so you can submit it elsewhere, including the White House.

As a disabled person myself, I can sympathize with your situation and I definitely understand your need for help.

I've done a bit of research and found these resources for you:

HUD Housing in Maryland
http://portal.hud.gov/portal/page/portal/HUD/states/maryland

Department of Housing http://www.dhcd.maryland.gov/Website/Default.aspx

Autism Speaks
http://www.autismspeaks.org

Autistic Society

Please let us know if the resources have helped you in any way.
