Single Mother Disabled By Sickle Cell Anemia Seeks Grant Money For School

by Antoinette Ewing
(Kokomo, IN, USA)

Mother and Daughter

Mother and Daughter

Hello my name is Antoinette Ewing and I am a single mother of one child. I'm living with a disease called Sickle Cell Anemia, which is considered a disability.

I've tried to get a job but I find it very hard to do so without a High School Diploma or a GED.

I want to try my hardest to make the best life for my daughter and me, but it's very hard to do so without the finances that I need.

I also run into a problem with my disease. There's not much I can do when I can't stand for very long and cannot work in places that are very cold or hot.

The type of Sickle Cell Anemia that I have is rare. It attacks my body with no type of warning or symptom at all.

That is why I chose to go back to school and get my High School Diploma online. I chose to do this online for the following reasons:

(a) I can't afford a baby-sitter and this way I can stay home with my daughter.

(b) Because of the financial situation I am in I cannot afford a car or provide the gas money in order for someone to take me back and forth to school, plus pay a baby-sitter.

(c) I feel it will be a little easier on me to work at my own pace by doing the schooling at home online.

Right now I am currently unemployed with no income at all. I have some debt between all the things a baby needs and all of my utilities that I have to pay.

I'm asking the state to help me out with a grant for at least $2,500 that will be enough to cover all my schooling finances plus $1,300 to put towards the things my daughter and I will need and even pay off all my utilities and personal debts.

I would really appreciate it if the state would bless me with this financial blessing. It would help me out a lot. I would be forever grateful and you would truly be my heroes.

I understand that the state gets letters like these all day everyday, but I truly just want to make a happy home for my daughter and me.

I want her to grow up and be proud of her me for going to school even though I have a baby.

I would love for her to follow in my footsteps and pursue her schooling all the way through to college, which is what I plan to do.

Take heart!
by: Anonymous

Hey single Mom!

I can only say God has brought you this far not to leave you. Some of the ways of geting help is trying to sign in for a pell grant and once you get to school try applying for the scholarships. I even know there are daycares that offer assistance to people who qualify for such daycare and even later preschool for your daughter. Try to find out what resources are available for you. Sometimes we stereotype ourselves because we feel nobody cares for sickle cell but you can be proactive with some assistance from local authorities in your area. It hurts me when Disabilities are defined with racism and who is afflicted. Nobody choses to be born with SCD. If only they would have the pain then they will know what it means but God speaks and acts for the vulnerable in society and where there is no justice may his mercy prevail. And may God listen to this because I believe He gives us what we have because He knows we can handle it. All we ask is to help us to live a quality life!

Persist in Prayers
by: Obedi

Dear Single Mom,
I cannot say I know how you feel, but I was really moved by your story. I have a son who is suffering from SCD. He's 2.5 years, and seeing what he goes through when in a crisis, I can imagine your case. I love my son very much.... a very handsome and comical kid. I'm going on 38 years and this is my second child and we are in Africa. I'm surprised at your situation since I thought America is well placed in handling such cases since a lot of research has been carried out on this disease and other related cases...

Please put your situation to Jehovah God in prayers at all times and he will exalt you.

Love
Obedi

Hang in there!

Hello Single Mom,

It's touching to hear your story. I also admire you and you're in my prayers. Whatever you do, don't lose the faith in God. He will never let his children suffer or do without. It's a trial period for you and when your blessings come through, they will abundantly. I'm really happy to hear that you want to make a better life for you and your child.

I also have sickle cell anemia and have had serious bouts from middle school all the way through this current day. The Lord has blessed me to complete college along with graduate school. I'm currently employed with the CDC. I'm 32 years old and will be 33 in November. I've been blessed to work throughout my life with some understanding bosses.

Life is not easy with have this disease but you can accomplish anything you want as long as you place God first. Know that you're in my thoughts and prayers and if you ever need any encouraging, just let me know. Be blessed and good luck.

Harry

Sickle Cell
by: Cynthia

Hello Single Mom,

I just want to say that I admire your courage and fight to not give up on your dreams. I was diagnosed with Sickle Cell from birth. I never had any children, not by choice, it just never happened for me. I spent at 4 years in a wheel chair and was blessed with a miracle to walk again. I am now 52, will be 53 in November and have been in and out of the hospital with crisis. You know the drill, sometimes cannot walk, cannot get out of bed, etc.

I had been trying to get finance for school since Social Security has turned me down 3 times. About 10 months ago, I got a call from a lady Maria, from an online school that helped me to get financial help for school. I have been in school at The International Academy of Design & Technology for a year, come October 9th. I am a 4.0 average student.

I know that there are people out there that care, so I know you will get the funds to go to school. I think they will even help you get your GED, don't quote me on that, but I think so. However I know that you can get funding to attend college.

My prayers are with you and your beautiful daughter.

Love,
Your sister Cynthia
