Single Mother And Grandmother Seeks Housing Grant For Disabled Child

by Melody Tomlinson
(Fayetteville, Atizona, USA )

Sierra McCallay is an eight-year-old girl. She has ichthyosis and has had a painful childhood, along with never having a home for very long in one place.

She was recently removed from her mother, and her daddy is incarcerated. I am her paternal single grandmother and I am now the guardian and I take good care of her.

I live in a very small rented house. I gave her my room and my son lives in the other room and goes to college.

I work very hard and get two weeks off a year. She is sad a lot because she goes to public school and the children call her ugly.

She cannot sweat, and her skin grows and falls off continually. Her eyes cannot close all the way, with no tear ducts.

She has a hole in her head where her hearing aid snaps on and her skin cracks and bleeds. I have to constantly lubricate her.

I would love to be able to do more for her, like get her a bigger house. But I cannot afford to on my wages.

I cannot afford to do anything special for her like going to Disneyland, which she always dreams of.

She also loves playing sports and cannot for very long, because she gets too hot. I would just love to be able to do more for her.

If there is anyone out there that can help Sierra please let us know. Thank you. Melody Tomlinson.

My best wishes for you to receive money and help so you can take care of your grandchild. I just lost my first grandchild to harlequin ichthyosis. She was severe and only lived for 6 days.

Please tell you granddaughter/grandson, they are NOT UGLY. But so very special. The people in this world that torture those who are different and challenged are the UGLY ONES.

Congratulations on making the effort to submit your story to Accessible.org.

With the publication of your story, you are now well on your way to:

1. Getting your story known to a wide audience that could help you.

2. Getting your story polished up and presentable so you can submit it elsewhere, including the White House.

As a disabled person myself, I can sympathize with your situation and I definitely understand your need for help.

I've done a bit of research and found these resources for you:

HUD Housing in Arizona

NRCSHHM
