Single Mom To Disabled Children Seeks Grant Money For Accessible Home Repairs

by Christine Pendley
(Lancaster, California, USA)

One of my blessings

One of my blessings

I am a single mom to special needs children. My daughter is 15 years old and does not walk or talk.

We live in an older home that is not very wheelchair friendly. The bathroom door is too narrow for her chair to go through and it's extremely hard for me to get her into and out of the bathtub.

She weighs 90 lbs and having to lift her up and out of a tub when she is wet is a nightmare.

We really need a bathroom remodel with the door being widened to access her wheelchair and the tub removed with a shower installed. We also need a permanent wheelchair ramp.

Being a single mom and living on just the adoption assistance that I recieve, there is no extra money to pay a contractor to make these much needed changes.

A grant would be a much needed and appreciated blessing.

I did some preliminary research tonight about grants for individuals who are wheelchair bound. Some of the listings here you may already have access to.

Sometimes hardware stores or even universities can help to build per/volunteer, or service learning type of program. It's worth a try. Contact a hardware store for donated materials, then a college and talk with someone in the service learning / volunteer or internship department. You'd be surprised how many projects universities fund, with work being done by the students.

Have you contacted anyone about respite care or a home health care aid to help you with the home, or childcare so you can get out once and a while? Don't forget to make some time for yourself :) I know easier said then done.

Good luck to you,

Sincerely,

I feel your struggle!
by: Terrica

I know what you are going through. I am a single mom who has an 11 year old with CP confined to a wheelchair and I struggle every day to take care of her. All I can say is to hang in there and may God bless you. Your daughter is beautiful.
