Single Mom Seeks Wheelchair Accessible Van Grant For Accident Disabled Son

by Barbara Carraway
(Garland, TX, USA)

My son Colby is paralyzed due to a brain injury he suffered from multiple gunshot wounds in 2003. He currently resides in a nursing facility in Dallas TX.

At the time Colby was injured, he was 22 years old and attending barber college. Since he had only worked part-time jobs, he did not have enough money paid to social security to receive disability benefits.

Colby was taken to the nursing facility after spending several months in the hospital in a coma. He remained in a coma for over a year.

Because proper care was not provided, his muscles have become retracted making it difficult for him to travel by car, etc,.

October 10, 2011, will mark 9 years in a nursing facility. Colby lacks growth because of the age difference of the other residents/workers within the facility.

Colby is now 31 years old. Being in a nursing facility for such a long time and at such a young age, has not allowed him to grow mentally.

I believe this is because the older residents/workers see him as a child and treat him as such. He needs to be able to interact with others closer to his own age.

I need assistance to make my van wheelchair accessible. By having a wheelchair accessible van he will not have to be confined 24/7 at the facility.

I do appreciate any consideration in this matter.
