Single Mom Of Disabled But Capable Son Seeks Accessible Home Grant

by Traci Griggs
(Tulare, California, USA)

I am the lucky one to be chosen to be the mom to my son Tucker that happens to have a disability called Arthrogryposis.

He has no use of his arms and his knees don't bend. He spends most of his days in an electric wheelchair.

From his chair he writes with his feet, plays PlayStation and is one of the top students in his class even after skipping a grade.

We are hoping to find a grant to help us buy a home that has a built-in pool so that he can continue to get stronger walking and working out in it.

Since water is the only way he gets exercise we are hoping to get him a home with a pool.

At this time we have an aboveground pool, but it is getting to be hard on me. He is 12 years old now and getting heavy.

In our search for a new home we are hoping to also find one that has a bathroom set up better for his needs.

Congratulations on making the effort to submit your story to Accessible.org.

With the publication of your story, you are now well on your way to:

1. Getting your story known to a wide audience that could help you.

2. Getting your story polished up and presentable so you can submit it elsewhere, including the White House.

As a disabled person myself, I can sympathize with your situation and I definitely understand your need for help.

I've done a bit of research and found these resources for you:

HUD Housing Program California
http://portal.hud.gov/portal/page/portal/HUD/states/california

NRCSHHM
National Resource Center on
Supportive Housing and Home Modification
http://www.usc.edu/dept/gero/nrcshhm/directory/

Fall Prevention: Center of Excellence
Home Modification Program

Please let us know if the resources have helped you in any way.
