Roommate Seeks Government Grant For Accessible Home For Disabled Partner

by Patricia Harden
(Des Moines, Iowa, USA)

I am writing this for my roommate Betty with whom I have lived for 30 years. She is 72 and I am 59.

The last five years her legs and feet and knees have gotten worse. She spends a majority of her time in a wheelchair all day.

She is not one to ask for assistance because she believes that someone else might need it more.

A couple years ago we paid $800 to have a ramp built on the front of the house. Well, we were not aware that it was not up to code but it is not.

The incline is too steep and her electric wheelchairs wheels lift up in the back and she cannot ever go down the ramp without assistance.

Till recently, I worked 40 hours a week for a business for 23 years. However, I had to quit due to scheduling changes that would change every 90 days and this would not work with trying to take care of her and myself.

We want to stay in our home and have applied for NFC financing but I was turned down to my bad credit rating.

The bad credit is the result of medical bills and being on short-term disability for about five weeks and various times throughout the year.

I am currently three months behind on the mortgage. I trust in God that we'll somehow get through this. However, I'm not sure how.

It would help if she could get a better ramp in front and a way out through the back, plus a bathroom that she could get all the way in with her wheelchair.

Her quality of life would be so much more improved.

I'm sorry don't have access to a picture of her or me, but she is a loving Christian individual who deserves a break.

Please review this story and let us know what you can do as soon as possible. I am at my wit's end in trying to figure out what can be done. Sincerely, Patricia (Patty) Harden.
