Polio Disabled Woman Seeks Government Grant For Van With Wheelchair Lift

by Nancy
(USA)

My story starts long ago in 1949. I had Polio and have walked with a brace and two crutches ever since. It's made life an uphill struggle at best.

Always being very independent, accomplishing feats along the way, I worked 14 years and am now living on Disability. May I say nothing could be done without the Lord in my life.

Now I have a hip replacement because I fell and broke my hip in 2002. In the past year and a half, I have fallen three times.

I've broken my knee and my upper leg clear through to the bone. I have a rod and screws there.

Two months ago my wrist was shattered. I had surgery and they put in a plate and screws. It is very stiff and I'm right handed, so I'm having therapy.

I also have had two pelvic bones broken at different times, then a thumb and then a finger. So with much dismay the doctor now says I must stay in an electric wheelchair to avoid more broken bones.

This brings me to my need for a grant. I can't walk anymore so I can't get to the car. I drive, but can't get into and out of the van. I desperately need a van with a chair lift.

The reasons are obvious. I could get a part-time job and do the things that normal people do. But I cannot get out.

Well, I can't even imagine when I read this over, it sounds so simple, but to live it is another story like life has been taken away.

I've always been a very busy and full of life person. I love to help people and encourage them to go on and press on.

Please help me know what to do. I'm anxious to hear from anyone who can help in any way. Sincerely, Nancy.

Dear Nancy,

God bless your soul. I am now a disabled nurse LPN "low paid nurse" lol. Keep the faith dear. I was born in 1956, so imagine my disappointment also at having someone rear-end me on two occasions. I now have nerve compression, bilateral neuropathy in both feet. My legs get numb and I never know when they will give out on me. I was getting back blocks; however, now I have osteoporosis causing me to be on Boniva monthly and my right side was always worse than the left. The Bone mass density was done on the left side. I can only imagine how severe the right side is since you get steroids with the blocks and it pulls calcium from your bones.

I am 53 years old and have inherited not only osteoporosis but also osteoarthritis. My site is the Katrina victims' site. I too love to help people. Can you take calcium and zinc and magnesium supplements? I truly feel they would help you. I am assuming that the polio as a young girl did quite a number on your bones? Also there is a vitamin company that supplements your bones I do not know the name anymore, however most vitamin stores carry it. It healed my aunt who was given three months if lucky to live after breaking her hip. The reason is she has Alzheimer's. That was three years ago and the orthopedic doctor was amazed! I think you should get with a nutritionist and discuss supplements. I promise they help.

Now for the other problem, your faith in God that has kept you going and I am sure you're involved with a church of some religion right? Churches should help their congregation and raise funds as they are nonprofit and can help you. We live in St. Bernard Parish, LA and if you go to your preacher or priest or minister, tell them your situation and they without a doubt will help you. Remember they are nonprofit organizations. Try it, I bet you would be amazed. Truly they could hold a raffle for you and or do something to help a member get what they need. God Bless, GOOD LUCK, and oh, I would even try the dealerships to see if they would help hold raffles for the church. Sincerely, Denise.
