Persistent Disabled Woman Veteran In Wheelchair Seeking Educational Grants

by Brigit
(Armstrong County, PA, USA)

I have read some of the requests on this site and I almost feel too humbled to make a request for myself. But since I don't know where else to turn, here it goes.

I am seeking an educational grant to return to college for a degree in Hospital/Health Administration.

I recently ended up in a wheelchair (a few falls caused by a bad knee due to an accident while in the military).

I've become very frustrated with the amount (or rather lack of) help available to people finding themselves in a wheelchair for the first time in their lives.

I am literally dreaming of getting a degree and then starting a "short-term" assistance business for veterans.

I have found that little help is available when it comes to figuring out how to manage from a wheelchair, all of the sudden unable to stand up even for a short time.

All of a sudden upper or lower floors (basements) become inaccessible, kitchens and bathrooms no longer useable.

However, often there is little information "out there" to assist with everyday adjustments. Frustration, depression, joblessness, homelessness can be consequences of unmet needs that should be addressed!

I would like to gather information and make it accessible to everyone who seeks helps from agencies and who has a verifiable need.

As for myself, I am still unable to use the bathroom where I live. I had to join the YMCA, which is located about an hour away, to take care of physical hygiene needs, as I didn't think baby wipes were sufficient.

I can no longer cook, having relented after several severe burns to my arms trying to reach across.

I have trouble getting through doorways. Most public restrooms are by no means "accessible" because the door won't shut behind a chair!

However I have found ways to get by. But simply "getting by" is not enough. I could accomplish much more by getting a much-needed education.

I would then follow through by putting together a business assisting with the needs of those in a similar position.

I would be the first person in our family to ever get into a college or university.

Although I find myself short on encouragement and investigating available schools and cost I have quickly come to see that it will take some help to reach my goals.

I have a persistent spirit and lots of determination, especially due to my present circumstances (there are simply too many to mention here).

ANY help would be very much appreciated!

VA - Chapter 31
by: Anonymous

I work for the VA and there are options for you to go to school at their expense. If you are service-connected disabled 20% or more you qualify for Chapter 31, Vocational Rehabilitation. They not only pay for your schooling, they offer a living expense.

Grant,

I have been working with the VA for a while now and can only praise them for their caring and the help provided. They are the folks who got me a much lighter wheelchair just a few months ago and made it possible for me in the first place to transfer safely from a chair without falling by issuing a long overdue knee brace and my Arizona boot, and shoe ware to fit it is pending.

I am, however, not eligible for any educational assistance. It has been over ten years since I have been in the service and my eligibility for the GI-bill has long expired. Even back then, I was totally unable financially to take advantage of it. Let's face it, the amount is simply not enough when you barely make ends meet and live on day old bread and occasionally bologna and worry about being able to have gas to get to work and fill the tank for the heat and stove.

Although currently I am not in a completely destitute situation, I am financially unable to fund any college education. I did, however participate in the "Race to the GED" program while living in Portsmouth, VA in 2003 and graduated with honors as this program was offered for FREE!

Have you heard of the VA?
by: Grant Hopkins

There are some great agencies established to help. The first would be Veteran Affairs. Being in the military should qualify. My brother-in-law swears by them, unless some underlying reason why you can't work with them. They seem the best, considering your injury while serving; however, this may not be the venue to expose personal information, but if you were to locate some attorney from Land of Lincoln Legal Service. I congratulate you on you stamina. I'm back in a power wheelchair so I can relate, but hang in there. I'll pray for you.
