Parkinson Disabled Man Seeks Relief From Medical Expense Induced Debt
by David Williams
(Columbus, Ohio, USA)
My name is David Williams and I am 54 years old. I live in Columbus, Ohio and am on disability for Parkinson's disease and bipolar illness. I was a very hard worker for many years but found myself battling these illnesses.
My wife has been the sole support of our family for the last 10 years. When my mother died in 2004, my wife and I convinced my father to move from West Virginia to live with us. They had been married for 60 years when she passed and he was so alone.
I do get some disability for social security but my medical bills almost outweigh my income. Unfortunately my wife lost her job due to a layoff in June of 2009 and we are supporting our household of three on her unemployment, which will run out soon, and my disability.
Just my prescriptions alone average $2,000 per three months. I am thankful that we will have COBRA coverage, which helps until the end of this year but that $2,000 for pills is our co-pay amounts.
My wife and I have been married for 35 years this month and she deserves so much more that she gets. My father fell in October 2009 and broke his femur in three places.
My wife, while taking care of him fell and tore her ACL. She has to do all of the daily chores in the house, look for work and take care of both my father and me.
As you may be aware, Parkinson's has no cure and it eats at me to see the financial stress my wife is under with no job prospects in the future. She also knows that we will be unable to keep COBRA after year-end.
I know there are many new developments coming in the field of Parkinson's and I am ready and willing to better myself. I will have to undergo many daily visits by home health for physical and occupational therapy.
The co-pays will push us to the limit. We do have a mortgage and are trying to do everything we can to hold on to what we have and would appreciate any financial help that can be given.
I so feel like a burden to my wife and mind you, she has never made me feel so. This is truly a life-defining moment for us.
Thank you for your time and for any help you can point us to for the debt relief we know we'll need.
