Paranoid Schizophrenic 50 Year Old Single Mother Seeks Housing Grant Money

by Shirley Odigie
(Houston, Texas, USA)

I am 50 years old with a 13-year-old daughter. I would like to have a two-bedroom home that I can afford on $606 of SSI monthly income and $159 of food stamps.

My daughter and I have Medicaid. I am on medication daily. The pills that I take are: Invega, Benztropine, Trazodone and Lorazepam.

I also take Amiloride for my high blood pressure and Lipitor for my cholesterol. I have chest pain sometimes I worry if I am going to make it or not.

I want to be here long enough to see my daughter grow up. She goes to KIPP Liberation Preparatory School. I try to pay for her schooling the best that I can.

I would like to have a home with a front and backyard to it that would be a true blessing.

I live in public housing and was on Section 8 housing for years. Before that I lived in a one-bedroom home at the Lennox Apartments in Houston, Texas.

Her father bought me a car while living there, but they would always break out the windows, so I decided to move out of those apartments.

My daughter is graduating to the 7th grade and I am very proud of her grade average.

In my lifetime I have been on housing for a very long time. Right now I am living in the Cuney Homes apartments on housing paying the amount of $222 a month. Before it was $160.

We do not have very much after everything is paid. It is hard to manage most of the time.

I have to have windows units in the summertime and fire on the stove in winters. My car that I have now is a 1993 Honda Accord. I get $245 in child support.

Great Story!
by: Katina

Your story is one to be learned from. By listing what you have access to (medical/income), it allows people to limit their search efforts to specific issues: more income! Great job!

I have done a preliminary search and came up with several listings for transportation assistance programs in the Houston, Texas area. There is also a program called Project H.O.P.E. that offers first time homeowner grants. It may be worth checking into. However, any time you have something of monetary value it could have an effect on the amount of assistance you're eligible for. However, with a home, it also gives you credit and a firm foundation.

I googled the following; you can do the same: Submit grant application Houston Texas individual

You could also register for Grants Gate, and Grants.gov.

Foundations are a valuable place to find grants.

Contact the resource centers in your area to have them mail you a list of all available programs and assistance they know of.

Submit your story to your local newspaper (minus the amounts listed in the one you posted here), more heart felt for a human interest piece in your newspaper. A great way to get the newspaper to run a story is to have a neighbor, or family member submit the letter on your behalf, or to write one for you. It shows that someone else has taken interest and cares, therefore: it is "news."

Check back often for other comments on your story.

Don't give up. You are not alone.

God bless you and your family, always.

Sincerely,
