Newly Single Disabled 48-Year-Old Woman With A Beautiful Disabled Child Looking For A Government Grant

by Donna
(Virginia, USA)

I am a newly single disabled 48-year-old woman with a beautiful disabled child looking for a government grant of some sort. I was recently divorced after 23 years of marriage (not my choice).

We were left with nothing but the house we lived in (mortgaged to the hilt) and it was sold in divorce because I could not afford it or an attorney to help me keep it.

He took all furniture and I am living with 20-year-old furniture and cannot afford any better. My daughter is suffering from severe back pain and is going to many doctors at this time and is having to leave school for now because of it.

He cancelled my health insurance and I have none and am disabled and can hardly take care of myself at times. I have little money for food or clothes and am living in a small rental house right on a highway and it is almost unbearable.

I cannot find one I can afford on my Social Security. He has threatened to drop child support and what little I get each month. My daughter had therapeutic services and had to cancel them because I could not afford it.

I'm at the end of my rope. It's not fair. My daughter should not have to live this way because her dad found a younger healthy girl to be with.

My heart is broken because all my daughter hears is I can't afford it baby. I have nowhere to turn and have no family to help me. I am in such bad shape right now that I cannot even drive anywhere.

If anyone knows how I can get some help I would appreciate it greatly. I was raised in a Christian, loving, forgiving home but my faith has been tried to the limit and I just don't know what to do.

Please help. A government grant for the disabled or government assistance for women, or anything really, would help so much.

I am disabled also...
by: rainy

I am on SSD also and I am single. You should immediately apply for any/all benefits such as food stamps and Medicaid. Check to see if your state has an RX discount card. (Florida has a free one.)

Also apply for state/court remanded child support. He can't just stop paying you. Don't say anything to him because after you fill out the state forms, the court will find out how much money he makes and then set a percentage to award to you and your daughter. He will pay through the court monthly; so then he'll pay in full and on time. You need no attorney for this.

Go to benefits.gov and take the test and after you answer questions, it will list benefits that you and your daughter can apply for. Also ask local churches for help and go to food pantries for groceries. Comment here for more information. Good luck! xo

From a 48-year-old woman

It really isn't fair. It seems women always get the short end of the deal. And men just move on without a worry in the world. I wish I could help, but all I can do is pray for you and count my blessings. If this is your daughter's father, have her ask him for help at least for her. Parents get divorced, not the children. Children are your children forever no matter what age they are, especially if they are in medical need. I will keep you in my prayers.
