MS Disabled Retired Teacher Seeks Means To Work To Help With Bills

by Tammy J. Willeford
(Ore City, TX , USA)

My name is Tammy Willeford and I am 51 years old. I was a teacher for 23 years up until 2007 when I was forced to go into disability retirement.

I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis over 15 years ago. I made a conscious decision, at that time, to do whatever I could to continue working. We were already in the process of building our home when I was diagnosed.

I have been hospitalized multiple times over the past 15 years and used a cane, walker, or wheelchair whenever necessary to continue doing my job. However, despite my best efforts, the Multiple Sclerosis got to the point where I could no longer continue teaching.

Teaching was my passion and it really was very difficult to give it up. My husband Johnny continues to teach, and is eligible to retire in two more years, but will have to continue working as long as he can.

Over the past year and a half, it seems as if our income is not enough to cover all of our medical bills and much needed repairs to our home. I have tried to substitute teach some to supplement our income, but recently had a setback with my Multiple Sclerosis, which has made even that impossible.

I want so badly to work, so we can manage to pay our bills. We are now facing even more medical bills, due to many tests that I have recently had, and other tests and possible surgeries that I am going to have to undergo.

All of this takes money, and we simply do not have enough to cover all of these medical expenses, make repairs to our home and keep what we have worked so hard for.

My husband and I have always been faithful Christians, and we know that somehow God will always provide a way. My husband is an elder in the church, a wonderful man and works very hard.

Even through my illness, I have continued to teach Bible classes and help in the work of the church. These last few statements may seem irrelevant, but I want others to know that we are good, decent, and hard-working people.

I would like to get some training in Medical Transcription, so that I can work from home. However, that also takes money that we do not have.

It has always been a goal of mine to help other people with MS, and I will continue to try to help others cope with this illness. However, it seems now that, I, myself am one who needs help.

This may not be the answer to my prayers, but I will never know unless I try. It is my belief that there are those out there who are blessed financially and are willing to help others in need. Any financial help would be so much appreciated and such a blessing to us.

Thank you so much,
Tammy Willeford
