Mother Seeks Wheelchair Accessible Minivan Grant For Disabled Year Old Son

by Charity Jordan
(Flora, IL, USA)

My son is one year old. He was born with a very rare condition called Caudal Regression Syndrome. He does not have a tailbone and his legs do not bend.

He will be getting his first wheelchair very shortly and we are in desperate need of a wheelchair accessible minivan for him.

I am unable to work, as the doctors said that they would prefer for him NOT to go to a daycare, as there is a greater chance for him to get hurt.

My husband is a CNA and works part time at a local hospital. My son receives SSI, but between it and my husband's pay, we can barely cover our monthly bills.

We have to travel quite frequently to doctor's appointments in St. Louis, which is almost three hours from here, so we really need a dependable vehicle.

If there were any way that you can help us, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. Charity Jordan.

You don't need a van. Here's why.
by: Anonymous

For a small child, you do not need a wheelchair van. If your therapist or doctor has approved a wheelchair that is so heavy and cumbersome as to need a van to get in and out of the car, then that's the problem. A child's first wheelchair does not need to be a tank. It should be a lightweight chair. Wheels can be easily removed, and the back folded down. If you ordered push handles with it, these can also be removed. You can easily lift your child into the car, and the chair should easily fit into a trunk or seat of your car. Our child's chair fits easily into a car and it takes a lot less time to put it in than to wait for a van lower a lift and raise a lift. Your child's arms work fine and should be developed to learn to push the chair, as well as crawl into the car and car seat independently.

Other Options For Needed Van
by: Anonymous

I am so sorry for your problems with much empathy to you. Please contact local auto dealerships and see if they would be willing to hold a raffle for you. Or you do a raffle non-profit, just for the cost of the van. I think your local church or non-profit organization could help you organize this. Hey they give away vans and SUVs all the time on OPRAH as well as ELLEN. This is what I would do first, because dealing with the grants is hard!!! Every state has different rules. Good luck and God bless!!!

Hang in There

If I were you, and given the amount of controversy surrounding health care these days, I would contact my congressman and senator with your problem. Approach it from a "voters" standpoint. They might listen. Also Easter Seals is another very good place to start even at such a young age. They specialize in helping persons with disabilities.

Good Luck!
