Injured Marine Corps Veteran Seeks Government Transportation Grant Money
by Brian Hay
(Newport Beach, CA)
My name is Brian Hay. I'm a single 35-year-old Marine Corps veteran with recent hand/wrist injuries.
I was injured one year ago on the job while working as a banquet server on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA.
My wrist/hand was injured so badly that I have been out of work for just over one year, following 35+ sessions of physical therapy, surgeries and post-op therapy.
I have lost a serious amount of opportunity to earn money in the last year and have been forced to live on below-poverty-level workers compensation.
My injury and poverty level income have forced me to declare bankruptcy and sell my motorcycle, which I can't ride anymore.
With the money from the motorcycle sale, I took a chance on a car with the $1000 and got a lemon that is not running after two weeks of use.
I suffer with pain every day and cannot open cans/bottles or use my injured hand for much of anything at all.
I have been forced to declare bankruptcy recently because I have been trying to survive on a below-poverty-level income from workers compensation.
I have an injured arm and therefore no ability to earn any other money to survive.
I have survived on food from local food banks and veterans' soup kitchens over the last year.
I cannot make it to my doctor appointments at the VA or privately for physical therapy/MRIs, etc.
I have no transportation to go and pick up my medicine at the pharmacy let alone go to the grocery store and buy a gallon of milk or a few things if I have a couple of extra bucks.
I cannot earn any income right now due to my totally disabled left arm/hand.
I recently had the surgery and then the staples were taken out a few days ago.
But the arm/hand is unusable until I complete a few months of physical therapy to rehabilitate it.
I have tried asking various organizations, my church and a few others for help with none yet received.
I am looking for grants to buy a vehicle or donated vehicles available for disabled Veterans.
I am also looking for grants to be used to return to school for radiology technician or similar courses.
