Handicap Accessible Home Repair Grant For Diabetes Disabled Widow

by Dorothy
(Dillwyn, Virginia, USA)

I'm a 69-year-old diabetes disabled widow. I was married to the love of my life until he passed away in 2004.

I have seven grown children. Some are married and some are not. They have their own lives and try to help me out when they can.

I only went as far as middle school. Back then my older siblings had moved away and my parents were getting older so I had to drop out to help them at home.

I never went to the military, but my husband and two of my sons are military veterans.

I have been classified as being completely disabled for some time now. I had my left breast removed over 35 years ago. I'm diabetic and lost sight in my right eye about eight years ago.

My financial hardship would be my home. I have a 1999 singlewide trailer that is running down. The cabinets and floors need a lot of work and they can be hard for me to reach at times.

My daughter does what she can to help out, but she returned back to school to receive a degree when her health took a turn for the worst. She has lupus and vascular disease, but takes time out to do all the chores.

She recently purchased a used car with her school money, so it would take pressure off the rest of the family, when I need to go to doctor visits.

She also signed me up so that my Medicaid would be billed so I could receive my medications through the mail. It helped out a lot.

I have a hard time getting around as well. When my daughter takes me out to do shopping, she has to push me in a wheelchair and it can be a strain on her, but she does not mind.

I have one functioning bathroom. I couldn't fix the other, but my children pulled together to provide me with a walk-in shower being it was to hard for me to get in and out of the old tub with my handicap shower chair.

The tub was cracked and I fell twice. Thankfully nothing was broken. My floors and porches are getting weak and my electrical heating unit in my home is not working.

I receive a disability check, which is Social Security Income and my husband's disability being I was a homemaker and raised the children while he worked.

I worked for one year and he made me stop after my breast was removed.

I receive food stamps, which is not enough at my age, but it helps.

We have an organization called Our Daily Bread that drops of healthy prepackaged foods once a week, but even that is a struggle because the foods are microwavable and I can't see the buttons so good to work the microwave.

Then Social Services sends out letters to help with your heating and cooling cost. My furnace does not work but I have a portable wall mounted heater that uses bottle gas.

I would like to receive a grant so that I can upgrade my home. It's airy and if I can receive this grant I will be able to cut my heating and cooling cost as well as to be a little bit more independent and take some stress of my children.

I just want to fix what my husband provided for me and stay in my home. I'm not getting any younger and I just want a home that is safe and handicap equipped for me.

I am a friend of the family and I am so thankful that this story is being heard. There are so many elderly people out there that need help, but their voices are going unheard. I pray that somehow she will be granted the opportunity to upgrade the home her husband prepared for her. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Continue to have faith. Help comes in many forms. I also would like to say to her daughter to be strong and continue to work with your Mom. Your strength comes from within. Many blessings.
