Attention! To be clear, when we use the word "grants" here, it's meant as a catch-all for any type of benefit: income supplements, counseling, therapy, medications, housing and so on.

Step 2. Determine Grants Available

There are thousands of grants available. You have no choice but to scout the terrain extensively until you find something that matches your situation. There are online databases to make this step somewhat easier.

Step 3. Learn Grant Evaluation Criteria

Once you've found a grant program, you need to learn how your application will be evaluated. Sometimes it's very clear, sometimes not. If it's not clear, you have to find out. Otherwise you could be wasting your time.

Step 4. Write Your Grant Application

Follow the granting agency's instructions to the letter. Show them how you are helping THEM to meet THEIR goals. Assume they only care about themselves and they don't give a damn about you.

Step 5. Follow Up, Learn, Improve

You likely won't win that first skirmish. Debrief. Assess what went wrong. Develop a better plan and attack again. Your new strategy might involve another target (granting agency).
