But First, The Bad News
In spite of the hype, there's actually no such thing as government grants to START a business. If there were that would make our governments the biggest venture capitalists in the world!
The fact is we get seduced by the commercials on television and the Internet. Their misleading wording feeds our false hopes. But the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has been cracking down on government grant scam artists. Please view this FTC video completely before proceeding.

How can you recognize and avoid grant scammers and fraudsters? Here are some valuable tips and suggestions based on sound advice from none other than the Better Business Bureau:
- You will not be contacted by the government to offer you a grant. The government does not contact people to offer them government grants for businesses. If you do qualify for a government grant, the government does not request payment for it.
- There are no fees associated with applying for a government grant. Providing financial information to prove that you qualify for a government grant is typical, but you should never pay money to apply for a grant. People who run scams often claim to provide help and sometimes claim to be "federal government" officials. Don't be fooled by these scammers requesting money from you.
- All government grants involve an application process. If you have not submitted an application for a government grant and someone claims you have been awarded one, it's a scam. Grant money is not given over the phone for a fee. In order to qualify for a grant you must apply for the specific opportunity that you are qualified to apply for.
- Government grants are awarded for explicit opportunities. Government grants are typically awarded to states, cities, educational institutions, nonprofits and other organizations to fund research and other projects.
- Government grant applications and information are free. Be cautious of offers that ask for your personal information (especially financial) when requesting a fee to access grant information. You can always access free information about government grants and other benefits at grants.gov and govbenefits.gov.

If you're involved in federal funding for an organization seeking government grants for businesses, you'll want to read Grant Fraud, which was developed by the National Procurement Fraud Task Force. It offers great tips to protect your organization and the source of your federal funds by helping to detect and prevent fraud.
Okay, that seems to be a lot of bad news. Is there any good news? Yes!!!
And Now For The Good News!
The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) oversees all grants awarded by federal government agencies. HHS recognizes 16 classes of recipients. The following HHS report shows, as of mid-2009, the number and dollar value of grants awarded to each type of recipient.

Although the information is being updated almost continuously, the distribution and order of magnitude stays about the same and that's what we're interested in here.
This table shows clearly that there IS a huge amount of grant money being given out by the federal government and a good chunk of it for business purposes.
The table also shows that very little money in government grants for businesses is going to individuals. The grant money actually goes to other organizations who then redistribute it.
So, if you're looking for a government business grant, you will more likely apply for it to an agency that is NOT federal. It's more likely that you'll apply to a program run by your state, county or city. There are also nongovernmental agencies distributing grants.
Wherever you apply for assistance, you'll have to make your case in writing. This is especially important when it comes to government grants for businesses.How Our "Story" Program Works

- Write. Put it all in writing on your computer. Use Microsoft Word or a similar program for this. Write as well as you can. And be positive!
- Submit. Copy the text from your story file and paste it into the form below. Then click the Submit button.
- Admire. We then publish your story right here on this site for you to admire and for visitors to make helpful comments.

A Typical Business Grant Story
Following is a sample story of a veteran making his case for government grants for businesses to help him and his wife open up a soup and sandwich restaurant.
Veteran Seeking A Government Business Grant
I'm a 69-year-old US Army veteran seeking a government business grant. I draw a pension check because of my hearing and a nasal operation while in the military. I had a Mae West parachute malfunction while in the 82nd Airborne jump school that has been ignored by the VA.
I have suffered excruciating pain in my ankles, legs and knees my entire life. I'm not able to stand any more for any period of time, and that limits my ability to earn a living. I get $1,500 monthly from social security and the VA. My wife is a cancer survivor, and we have no savings.
We live on what we can eke out from any source on a month-to-month basis. My wife is a tremendous cook though, and we have talked of starting a soup and sandwich restaurant.
I feel this would be a good venture due to the lower cost rather than some of the places I have heard of wanting $30 and up for meals. We have no money to set up anything like this, but feel it would be a great place to have and operate.
The jobs we could generate from the help needed to operate this would benefit other people also with a paycheck. I served a 3-year hitch in the army, and have been treated like dirt by the VA.
They refuse to acknowledge any damage that WAS done by the horrendous impact as I hit the ground as a result of the parachute malfunction. I somehow need to have something I could operate and make a positive impact on this community.
I could earn a decent living in so doing. As a veteran seeking government grants for businesses, I pray somehow someone will listen and step to the plate to compensate for the cowardly and crooked treatment by the VA.
