Government Grant Money For PTSD Disabled Vietnam Era Army Veteran

by James
(Corsica, South Dakota, USA)

I'm a 60-year-old PTSD disabled Army veteran from the Vietnam era. I'm looking for grant money to cover medical expenses.

I served my country from 1968 to 1971 and am now disabled (service-connected 30%).

Married to my best friend and partner for 21 years, I am blessed with four wonderful children, two from a previous marriage and two from the present marriage.

We live in small town America (Corsica, SD) where I am able to work part time in the construction field.

My disability is hearing and PTSD and even though that is a partial problem it is not the main problem.

My wife is disabled with a back injury and is a diabetic but cannot get SSI as we don't have medical insurance to cover the required examinations.

We struggle daily to break even but as of late we have fallen behind in our obligations to our creditors (electric, phone, rent, etc.)

We have always been able to maintain until recently and now are facing homelessness and worse.

Our financial hardships are basic. We are behind in our rent and even with the understanding of the landlord, I still feel obligated to her. Our electric is past due as well as our phone service.

We have borrowed all we can from all sources possible and they are pushing to get us to repay them as we hoped to be able to do.

My work has been limited this year due to the adverse weather and the flooding in the area, which has delayed work until next year.

Still the medical costs continue and the medications for my wife must be purchased to maintain her limited lifestyle.

We continue to operate a 1999 Ford as our personal vehicle and at times find that hard to maintain as its age is beginning to show.

My earnings are limited to when I can work. I do receive VA compensation for my disability ($421/month) and have applied for food stamp assistance ($295/month).

I'm unable to collect unemployment as my company has stated to the state that I am subject to recall even though winter weather has suspended work.

I do craft work at home but that only brings in approximately $40-50/month.

I am seeking a financial assistance grant to cover:

- past due bills
- medical costs for wife
- medications for my wife
- basic living costs (four months)
- repaying those who have helped us out so far
- the cost of vehicle repairs and upkeep

I figure about $16,000 would keep us going until I can return to work this coming spring.

I would also like assistance with referral to an SSI lawyer who is willing to help us with my wife's claim.

Hi James,

I searched high and low and found a couple of websites you can visit. Just copy and paste them to your browser:

research.lawyers.com
www.vetadvocates.org

You just might find some help there. Don't forget who you voted for. Do you think it would help getting in touch with them? Catch them on their false promises. Make it public and push them, make yourself stick out like a sore thumb. If you give up trying to be heard, they won't hear you, as they have plugged ears now anyway. Just remember to talk to them with true words and be honest and empathetic about others in your position. Make yourself be an advocate instead of a tyrant, as they will first assume you will be. Be forceful, but with tact. A calm approach with e-mail backup is the best approach, then you have a paper trail. Send copies to their opposition as well. Always end your statements with "Please Reply." Good luck and work hard at this. Only you can really help yourself. Ken
