Former Athlete Paralyzed by Pain Seeks Relief From Debt Due To Disability

by Cheryl
(Stateline, NV, USA)

Just a few years ago I had my picture in the paper as I shot down a pillow-soft slope on my snowboard. It was a "snow day" and the teachers were just as excited as the kids.

I'd had Fibromyalgia back then, and the pain would drive me crazy sometimes, but I had no idea what was to come.

I had a stressful year, which may have been the catalyst, but I set up an adorable Open House, came home, sat down to rest, and couldn't get back up!

My body was wracked with agony. My spine burned, my feet felt broken, the muscles in my back spasmed as though they had a life of their own. I called in sick, heartbroken to be missing my adorable second graders.

Little did I know that I would barely be able to move until November. I still have a great deal of pain. I miss my work, the sports and having a social life. But I know I must be grateful for the "little things" in life.

Financially, it was the "perfect storm." My live-in boyfriend had to close a once-successful company. He lived on his savings for months as he tried to find work.

My work disability program paid 50% of my salary. And I did not see one check for five months! That was a hard time, I was so worried about money, but I learned when pain reaches a certain intensity, it eclipses everything else.

I applied for aid, but it seems that our situation is unique: because we both had made good salaries, we do not qualify for anything even though we are struggling.

Our saving is depleted. Our utility bills alone are outrageous. Any help with utilities, mortgage, gasoline or food would be so greatly appreciated!! Even $5 could add up and make a tremendous difference. Thanks for listening.
