Financial Help For Example Setting Mother Disabled By Degenerative Disc Disease

by Kathy
(Jamestown, KY, USA)

I am 54 years old and disabled with degenerative disc disease and other conditions.

I have been married for 37 years. Most of those years were hard ones because at one time my husband was a drunk. He was abusive physically, emotionally and verbally.

I went to church and took my children to church faithfully. It was my faith in God that got me through many, many rough times.

I have four beautiful, hard-working children that I am very proud of. Our family has experienced its share of ups and downs but eventually my husband got saved and we all went to church together.

Neither of us has ever been in the military but my father and my husband's father were both WWII vets. My father in law served in the Army, my father in the Navy.

I have worked hard all my life and at times it was a struggle trying to raise kids on a minimum wage job. I have three biological children, two daughters and a son, and we raised a nephew and niece.

My nephew went to live with his mother when he turned 13. My niece Allison, whom I call my daughter, has been with us for almost 14 years.

Her mother was my baby sister, who was murdered when Allison was 7 months old. The courts gave custody of her to her father who was a drug addict and he turned her over to me after she was sexually molested.

She plans to attend college after high school. I have a daughter who is an RN. My son works in industrial maintenance. My first daughter works in a factory. I have two handsome grandsons that we are very proud of.

I have degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis, a curved spine, arthritis in my knees, and my feet hurt constantly. I don't know what causes my feet to hurt but I plan on going to a podiatrist to see if they can help me.

I worked in a nursing home and in different garment factories moving large bundles of material. When you sew your left arm is always higher than your right arm and it puts you in a bind.

I began developing tendonitis, bursitis, carpal tunnel, knots in my neck and ruptured discs in my back from different aspects of my job.

I now walk with a noticeable limp, and discs in my lower back have begun dissolving to the point I have bones growing together. This is quite painful for me.

Just last month I became very ill, and had to be rushed to the hospital where I was diagnosed with severe pancreatitis.

I spent five days in the hospital and since I only have Medicare, the bill is really extravagant for an income of $700 a month.

I have to go to the hospital in the morning for gall bladder surgery and I am worried about the bill.

I have not attempted to get a job. Jobs are scarce in this area. The garment factories moved almost all their jobs overseas. I am no longer a young vibrant person in good health.

I have worked hard all my life and taught my children to do the same, and they do. I haven't received any grants, donations, anything. I hate to ask for help but sometimes you need help.

I am looking for whatever I am eligible for, whether it's grants, benefits or any other form of assistance. I just need a little extra help.

My husband and I both have outstanding medical bills.

We just don't have money left over after I pay the bills, buy groceries, pay insurance and put gas in the car.

I am broke by then, but necessary things have to be paid for: electricity, water, phone, TV, etc.

I don't have any business ideas. I thought I might like to become a dog groomer and start a small dog grooming business but I have to be able to do that first. I mean physically as well as financially.

I have to have surgery tomorrow and will have to recuperate from that.

Not able to work
by: Ken

Hi Kathy,
It is possible that your injury was caused from the type of work that you did. Have you tried to get in touch with a Worker's Compensation Lawyer? It might be worth a try. Here is an address that you can copy and paste in your browser:

www.lawyers.com

They will ask you to type in the city where you are from. I'm not sure if it goes beyond the limits of liability, but you should give it a try. Ask about the free initial consultation. Be clear and upfront about your financial situation. As far as grants go, you can try some of the provided links at the bottom of this page. They want a lot of information which usually ends up without any grants. They find any excuse not to give you one, but, in the meantime perhaps you can call a local groomer and set up an appointment to help out, maybe like a contract deal just part time with no hour restrictions. If they are too busy, you could go and learn the job for minimum wage. Eventually, you may be able to prove that you can do a good job and get on full time. Just some thoughts.
Good luck,
Ken
