Family Of Accident Disabled Stephen Seeks Grant Money For Wheelchair Vehicle

by Lori Ann Burnett
(Rochester, NY, USA)

Last April 16, 2009 my son Stephen was hit by a car while riding his bike. I watched the accident happen as I called to him to come in.

My son hit face first into the windshield fracturing his eye sockets, breaking his nose, and suffering a traumatic brain injury in the process.

He was rushed to the hospital where he remained in a coma for almost two weeks. From there he was transferred to a local brain injury rehab hospital where he stayed for the next two months until insurance would no longer pay for his stay.

He has been home receiving care via outpatient rehab along with services from school.

Stephen is now primarily stuck in a wheelchair. He cannot walk on his own, he cannot effectively communicate using very few words to speak such as Hi, bye, yes, no and I love you.

Along with some minor adjustments to our home to accommodate him we are in need of a suitable vehicle to get him around with his chair.

We cannot afford to pay for that type of vehicle. We were told there are ways of getting help for such items. We are asking for this help.

Thank you for listening to our story.

Sincerely,

The Family of Stephen Burnett
