Epilepsy Disabled Man Seeks Housing Grant Money To Avoid Homelessness

by Michael Barnett
(Madison, Tennessee, USA)

My name is Michael Barnett and I am epileptic and I am unable to work due to frequent and unexpected seizures.

Also I was diagnosed on Christmas Eve with progressive lung cancer. My mother passed away and no will was made.

Even though I was paying for this house and there was a "reversed mortgage" put on it, due to my disability, I am unable to save it from foreclosure.

All I am wanting is a grant available to the disabled to help save the only thing that saves me from living on the streets.

I have attempted to apply for grants but as of now have been unsuccessful. I thank the Lord there are non-profit places such as yours that still have instilled the values that this country was founded on.

I am stressed out everyday thinking that I paid taxes to this country for my entire work life, and I have helped along the way, and now there is nobody to help me now that I'm in this position.

I beg of you, PLEASE HELP ME. Thank you. Sincerely, Michael Barnett.

My Heart Goes Out to You...
by: Katina

Thank you for sharing your story at Accessible.org. I was moved by your story because my step mom was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer a few months ago. My father works two jobs and they are struggling with house payments now. I don't know what they would have done if they did not have the income, or each other.

My heart goes out to you.

For your particular story, I think time is of the essence and spending a lot of time searching for the right grant on your own with your current health condition may not prove favorable. This doesn't mean you should stop looking, but I think you may be able to get others involved to help support you in your fight for keeping your home.

First thing I would recommend is to contact: every agency in your area, talk to the newspaper, talk to the community centers, ask family members to help you with this as well. They probably know you won't be able to do this all on your own.

What I think people don't realize about applying for grants is that is a long process, there is no quick fix, or easy way to obtain a government grant. With that said, another reason it is hard for individuals to find the grants that are specific to their situation is a lack of follow up on a grant opportunity.

Finding a grant lead is a big first step.

Step two is writing a grant proposal, and then having it reviewed by someone who can make the edits for clarity purposes and affectivities. Once the grant proposal is ready to submit, then the individual should keep looking for additional grants to apply for. Waiting for one to go through or to be accepted is like waiting on a teenager to clean their room: without being asked to do so, the chances are 50/50.

There are grants that can help home owners from bankruptcy.

Type in Google or other search engine:

grant application avoid home foreclosure, or:
(your city/state) grant apply individual

and see what links are available to you.

You could also write to the local news and television stations, tell them your story and ask if they would help you try to raise funds, or to list your email for help.

Create a website and post your story, share a video of you talking about your situation and advertise it on UTube, or on your website.

There are a lot of things you can do to raise funds.

Grants are out there, and so are programs that can help people with cancer who are in tough financial situations.

The American Cancer Society is a great place to start.

Thank you for posting your story.

I wish you the very best and will say a prayer for you. I'm a big believer in the power of prayer. Don't give up; someone is looking out for you. All you can do is your very best, and know that someone cares, and we really do.

Sincerely,
Katina from Accessible.org
