I've had two surgeries on my legs to lengthen my hamstrings and groins, one when I was four years old. I had casts on both legs with a bar in the middle. That's how I learned to walk. Nanny Darthie always said that Charity taught me how to walk, because she would always encourage me to walk on my own to her instead of crawling. At 27 years old with cerebral palsy, a mild learning disability, and panic attacks, I can still do nearly anything anyone else can do. I just have to do it a little slower or it might take me longer, but I will get it done! I go to Trinity Valley Community College in Terrell, Texas. I have my own horse to ride in horse shows. When I was in high school I rode on the Kemp, Texas rodeo team. I rode in the pole-bending event and also in play days. I'm telling my story here because I need help. I'm trying to get a government grant so that I can get a service dog for myself. He would help me with my balance, tell me when a panic attack is coming on so that I can go sit down. He would let me know when my sugar is getting too low, pick up things for me that I drop, and much more. I'm also in need of a truck so that I can get back and forth to school, go to the doctor, take my 72-year-old nanny to the doctor and go to the store. I could have more freedom and be less dependent on others! For me to come up with this kind of money on my SSI check of $349 a month is impossible. I've tried to figure out how to save for a vehicle but have not found a solution yet. I surely would appreciate any help that is given to me. My parents would be grateful also.
