Disabled Woman Needing Service Dog Grant Money

Disabled Woman Jamie And Horse Tigger At The World Show In Tulsa, Oklahoma

I'm a 27-year-old disabled woman needing service dog grant money. I was born with a disability called cerebral palsy. I was born three months early and weighed 1lb, 11oz. They almost lost both mom and I, so the doctors decided to birth me early so that mom could make it. But then I turned out to be mom's "Miracle Baby."

I've had two surgeries on my legs to lengthen my hamstrings and groins, one when I was four years old. I had casts on both legs with a bar in the middle. That's how I learned to walk. Nanny Darthie always said that Charity taught me how to walk, because she would always encourage me to walk on my own to her instead of crawling.

At 27 years old with cerebral palsy, a mild learning disability, and panic attacks, I can still do nearly anything anyone else can do. I just have to do it a little slower or it might take me longer, but I will get it done!

I go to Trinity Valley Community College in Terrell, Texas. I have my own horse to ride in horse shows. When I was in high school I rode on the Kemp, Texas rodeo team. I rode in the pole-bending event and also in play days.

I'm telling my story here because I need help. I'm trying to get a government grant so that I can get a service dog for myself. He would help me with my balance, tell me when a panic attack is coming on so that I can go sit down. He would let me know when my sugar is getting too low, pick up things for me that I drop, and much more.

I'm also in need of a truck so that I can get back and forth to school, go to the doctor, take my 72-year-old nanny to the doctor and go to the store. I could have more freedom and be less dependent on others!

For me to come up with this kind of money on my SSI check of $349 a month is impossible. I've tried to figure out how to save for a vehicle but have not found a solution yet. I surely would appreciate any help that is given to me. My parents would be grateful also.

Thank you for taking the time to read about this disabled woman needing service dog grant money. If you could pass my story along to family, friends and others, I would surely appreciate it.

Maybe this site can help out...

Also you can go to the Petfinders site (http://www.petfinder.com/). There is a lady in Kentucky that retrains dogs for such as you would need for a fraction of the cost. She has one now on the site, a German shepherd.

A friend of mine is trying to start up a program to rehab working dogs for this kind of work also. She has the nonprofit, and just needs start up money now.

Service Dog Grant Money
by: Wendy White

I can relate to the stories I've read in regards to needing a service dog. I am a 57 year old woman who is in dire need of such a dog. I am working with D. Titus Blackwood; With Alacrity Assistance dogs of Colorado to get my dog. As usual I do not have the $4500 it will cost for my training and the receiving of my dog. I have been accepted by the aforementioned nonprofit organization and have until approximately February of 2012 to raise the funds needed. By then I will have had my training and the dog his or her training. Then it will be time to have the $4500 paid off so that I can take my dog home.

I have fibromyalgia, neuropathy in my legs and a great deal of difficulty with my balance. I can't walk for any distance without my legs giving out on me. My regular doctor, Dr. James Tran thinks a service dog is a fantastic idea. I have fallen many times and my family is worried I will seriously injure myself. I ask sincerely for help or information as to where I can get the financial help I need and will be grateful beyond belief.

Service dogs
by: Anonymous

Hi,

I remember how hard it was to raise the money for my service dog 10 years ago, but it was worth it. I raised most of the money through local businesses and charities. There are also some service dog programs that will give you a dog for free (like Canine Companions for Independence - http://www.CCI.org).

Even if you get a service dog, you'll have to find the money for vet bills and food. Sometimes, you can get a local vet to provide free care for your service dog. You can also get pet insurance, but most of them make you lay out the money first, then get reimbursed. Also, major dog food companies will at least send you coupons to help pay for food. It's important that your dog receives a high quality food. It really does keep them healthy.

I don't know how things work in Texas, but here in New York we have a state program called VESID (vocational educational services for individuals with disabilities). They can help you find work, and you can set up a PASS account, where you put money away while keeping your SSI, until you have enough to buy a truck.

Good luck with everything.

I understand your ordeal. I have a disibility which causes my heart to stop temporarily. It has been hard to get funding going, so I started my own organization to fund Medical Alert and Service dogs. Apply for a Tax Exempt status with the IRS and register with your state. Then start fund raising.
