Disabled Single Grandmother Needs Grant Money To Help Raise Grandchild
by Florence L. Baranek
(Marlton, New Jersey, USA)
My name is Florence Baranek. I am 54 years old and I have severe Rheumatoid Arthritis. I'm looking for government grant money or any other assistance to help me raise my granddaughter.
My life has been hard and has become harder. There are so many things that could make my life better, more independent and I could be a better parent for my grandchild, but they take money.
Money is the one thing I don't have. My grandchild and I exist on $1,300 a month. My monthly mortgage payment is $897.64. I have just gotten my home out of foreclosure. I owe nearly $60,000 on my home.
I have lived in Marlton, New Jersey, in this home for over 20 years. I have raised my four children in this home. I took care of my daughter in this home during the last five years of her illness.
She had a terrible disease called Hidradenitis Suppurativa that took her life at the age of 25. She left behind a very young child that I have taken care of since she was born and will continue to raise.
My husband of 35 years died of cancer a year and a half ago. He left no life insurance and no savings. I have applied for food stamps but they tell me that there is a 60 to 90 day wait for approval.
I make sure my grandchild eats balanced meals but I exist on Spaghetti Os.
Right now I have a broken, rusty manual wheelchair on loan from the Lions Club. I can no longer leave my home unless it is under the most desperate circumstances.
The Rheumatoid Arthritis has started to affect my hands, wrists and shoulders. It hurts to try to propel a manual wheelchair. I need to have one of my sons push me. But they all have their own lives.
For me to have any independence I need an electric wheelchair or scooter that is lightweight and two small ramps. A vehicle that could accommodate the device would be a dream.
I need to be able to get to school events and other things for my grandchild. I love her so much and she is such a good child.
Currently my home needs many repairs and modifications. When I cook it is like playing Russian Roulette. I have had many 2nd degree burns because I have to cook from a chair and the stove and counters are too high.
My bathroom is also a hazard for me. I know it sounds like I need so very much, but if any of my needs are met I will be very grateful.
I thank you for taking the time to read my plea and direct me toward any government grant money or other help for which I might be eligible.
