Disabled Retired Man Seeks Grant Money For Segway

by Fred Gaspro
(Longview, Washington, USA)

Still Smiling

Still Smiling

I am disabled from a fall I took while working and broke my neck. I have chronic pain.

I am retired from the state and the young age of 65 (smile).

My wife of 42 years and myself just took a vacation into Arizona and at Lake Havasu where we rented two Segways.

I was worried whether I could stay on one but I am tired of not having fun when we have a chance to get away by ourselves so I gave it a try.

To my amazement, not only was I able to use one but also after about 15 minutes of training I felt wonderful. I was able to go wherever my wife went and at the end of the trip I just broke down.

This was the best time I have had in years. No stopping, no "Go ahead honey, I will be here when you get back."

I told her if I had one, well it would be a blessing. The chances though are little to none when I found out they cost well over $5000 dollars.

Then today I came across this site and I thought it never hurts to ask for help so, that is what I am doing.

If you have heard of anyone like me who purchased one and got help in buying it, I sure would love to hear about it.

My Quest For A Segway
by: Anonymous

No, I am not looking for a free Segway. What I would like to find is a used X2 for a very good price.

I hope you do find more and if so will share the information with others.

Any luck yet?
by: Katina

I thought you looked familiar. I saw your photo and essay about wanting a Segway on another website. I was wondering if you had any luck yet?

From the initial research I conducted on programs that offer grant money for purchasing a Segway, I didn?t come up with much. I think the reason is some places don't allow them to be used yet. This may be the reason that there is a lack of funding to purchase them. That doesn?t mean you cannot find grant assistance, and put it toward the purchase.

Have you tried obtaining other mobility devices such as a Scooter? The Scooter Store has applications online for clients of Medicaid /Medicare. This may be one option to look into until you find a grant to buy a Segway.

I'd also check into the company that makes the Segway. Sometimes, they offer great discounts on purchases when buying directly from the manufacture, or if the person buying it offers help with advertising. It is worth a shot. Write to the company and tell them your story and ask: "Could I get a Segway in exchange for sharing how this device has improved the quality of my life." You never know, they just might go for it!

I got into a trial study for face cream due to acne once, when I was unable to afford acne medication. I wrote the company and within a month, I receive a free six-month supply. Neat huh?

Thanks for sharing your story here. Good luck finding your Segway!

Sincerely,

Katina from Accessible.org
