Disabled Husband And Father Seeks Grant Money For Medical Expenses

by Johnny Wayne Mulky
(Salem, Alabama, USA)

My Kids and Me

My Kids and Me

Eleven years ago I had to go to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama to have a tube put in my throat due to having severe sleep apnea and an enlarged tongue.

At that time I was fighting to get my disability started and my wife was pregnant. About one month before my son was born I got approved.

Things had started getting better for us and then five years ago I got put on kidney dialysis and have been told I have congestive heart failure.

In June 2007, I fell and tore the quads in my legs and now I can't walk. I'm in a wheelchair being pushed here and there with no money for my three kids or wife. My SSI is $57 my SS is $562.

We live in a mobile home that is not handicap accessible and has several unsafe conditions for my family and me. It needs repairing but we can't afford to fix it.

I have to use a bedside commode and my wife has to give me a birdbath because I can't get into the bathroom.

We have a minivan that my wife drives to take the kids and me to doctor appointments but it is not made for my wheelchair.

My wife and kids had to take out one of the bench seats so that she could use the boards to put my chair in it.

We need a lot of help. The stress is bad on my wife because she has to do so much and worry how to take care of everything since I'm not much help.

The stress is also bad on the kids and is affecting their schoolwork and grades and we feel bad because we can't afford to let them play any after-school sports or activities because we don't have enough money.

We have to struggle to keep the bills paid and buy groceries and other necessities we need to survive.

My wife took a family medical leave in August 2008 and lost her job and they won't let her draw unemployment.

Now I lie in the bed or sit in my chair day after day when I'm not on dialysis wondering how we are going to survive each and every day.

I am a 44 and my wife is 37. We have three beautiful children: two girls 15 and 17, and a son 10.

I feel like they have been robbed of so much that I as a husband and father cannot give them.

Is there anyone out there that can help a truly needy family or tell me where to get help?

I'm not just asking for myself but for my wife that tries so hard and my children that mean the world to us.
