Disabled Grandmother Raising Two Grandsons With Developmental Disabilities

by Nancy
(Las Cruces, NM, USA)

I'm a disabled grandmother raising two grandsons with developmental disabilities. I've been a registered nurse for 30 years in New Mexico. My grandsons have been with me since birth.

They receive Medicaid and nothing else from the state. I receive SSDI and Medicare. We do not get any kind of housing help. As my disability progresses it is harder to make ends meet.

I have a 2003 Saturn, which is marginal in drivability, and I'm still paying on it. I do not have sums of money tucked away for a down payment on a house or a new car.

I am most concerned about my youngest grandson who is cognitively unable to ever live by himself. I worked very hard all my life and kept my grandchildren so they could be raised in their own family.

It seems like if I had never worked and been a contributing member of society, I would be better off. My grandsons deserve a chance.

Please allow our family to make it. Let me know of any help I can get as a disabled grandmother raising two grandsons with developmental disabilities.

I also am a grandmother raising 2 grandsons. My son is helping a little. Their mother has not been around in years but their grandmother and step-grandfather help with buying clothes and other things. I really feel for you. God Bless. Have you checked into getting your boys on disability? This could even be help like someone coming into the home (like home health) to give you a break. You may call SSI or social security office. Hope this helps a little. You can always look around and see people that need help more than you do.
