Disabled Divorced Grandmother Seeks Government Grant For Family Vehicle

by Linda Schrawyer
(Omaha NE, USA)

Myself and my grandsons

My name is Linda Schrawyer, I am 56 years of age, female, divorced, and my daughter and three grandsons live with me.

I have worked as substance abuse counselor, and in Protection and Safety for the state of Nebraska.

I was doing well, working for the State when I became really ill, and ended up in the hospital on a respirator for 2 weeks because I just quit breathing.

Medically I am diagnosed with (C.O.P.D.) Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, also known as chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

I had to resign my position as a case aid because the position called for (40) hours weekly, and my doctor would not release me for more than (16).

There is not any cure for what I have. I can maintain a certain quality through medications; however, it is nowhere near what one would consider a normal life, if there is such a thing these days.

I was able to get S.S.I. and receive $764 per month for living expenses. I live in low-income housing; my daughter and three grandsons live with me. My daughter Christina is 24, and my grandsons are, Fernando (7), Miguel (5), and Jaydn (2).

Christina is working on obtaining her G.E.D., and now does work experience at the humane society. She receives $435 per month for her sons and herself.

We did have a car; however once I was no longer working we could not afford the payments, which makes it extremely difficult to go to the grocery store. We do get with some regarding transportation to our doctor appointments.

We also qualify for a food debit card, which in total between my daughter and myself amounts to about $600 per month. With today's inflated prices, that barely gets us through the month regarding food. The Good Neighbor Church helps with pantries when they can, mostly around the holidays.

I would like to be able to get a vehicle, so we can be mobile more then we are. I need a car or van big enough for my three grandsons, my daughter and myself to ride safely in. It does not have to be brand new. I am looking for reliability, as well as good gas mileage.

I appreciate what we do have, and I realize we have more than many other people in similar situations as ours. It is only by the grace of God that we do manage our lives with some degree of dignity.

I realize there are no guarantees when applying for this grant, and I appreciate the opportunity to apply.

Thank you for taking the time to read my missive and application for this grant. I appreciate it. I am hoping of course someone will take notice, and be able to offer us help with what we need.
