Disabled 29 Year Old Man Seeks Grant Money For Self Sufficiency

by William Lea
(Washington State, USA)

2003 Transplant

2003 Transplant

I am a 29-year-old male living in Washington State and in desperate need of income.

At age seven, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and by age 21 my kidneys had failed and I was on kidney dialysis. I had a kidney/pancreas transplant in 2003, but the organs soon rejected.

I also developed post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder, which is a type of cancer than can occur because of renal transplant. The chance that I would get this was about 1 in 10,000.

After going through four rounds of chemotherapy I again went back on dialysis and in 2007 I received my second kidney/pancreas transplant, which is still working well to this day.

However, because of the immense surgery, and complications from having diabetes for so long I now have back problems and severe stomach problems.

Having these problems makes it impossible for me to work, as I do not know how I will feel one day to the next. It is a roller coaster for me.

I am currently on Social Security Income due to my disability but can only receive around $450 a month, which is not much. Medicare and Medicaid pay for my doctor and hospital bills and most of my prescriptions.

I still have out of pocket costs however such as travel expenses when I have to go to doctors and the University hospital which is out of town.

Thankfully I have a loving family with whom I stay, but I hate to be a burden on them. I would like to have my own residence some day but the income I have now will just not allow for that.

Thank you for your time and any government grant help you can point me to. Sincerely, William Lea.
