Daughter Seeks Transportation Grant For 69 Year Old Disabled Mom

by Deborah
(Conley, GA, USA)

I am writing this in hopes of being able to get transportation assistance for my mom who is 69 years old. A government grant or any assistance really, would be wonderful.

My mom is a widow. She lost her husband and my dad in December of 2007. They were both paying their mortgage on their loan with their social security income, but now my mom is down to only one income.

She has had many medical issues over the past 15 years that have required hospitalization. She is a cancer survivor. She had to have her left breast removed.

She has Type 2 diabetes and she is a dialysis patient three times a week. She doesn’t complain about what she has to endure on a daily basis. She always finds a way to get through the day.

She has neuropathy of both hands and feet, along with chronic high blood pressure. She has had glaucoma and cataract surgery, and her vision is still bad because of the diabetes.

She had a stroke in 2009 and was hospitalized for five days. She now since then, has begun to show signs of short-term memory loss due to her stroke and dialysis.

She goes to doctor appointments nearly 3-4 times a week. I am a care provider for her. She needs to have an arm to hold on to when she is walking. She stumbles a lot.

She dialyzes M-W-F. She was told that because she lives in an area that is not provided with a bus line, she cannot get the local bus mobility pickup to her front door for her treatments.

She has to go three to four blocks from her home in order to get to a general location where pickup is available. Unfortunately she has to pay over $7 a day to be able to get to dialysis and return.

She is on a fixed social security income and it is costing her more than she really wants to pay but she really has no other choice because she has to get to her treatments.

I am trying to find out if there is a way that my mom could get the transportation that is needed for her to be able to get picked up and dropped off from her front door to her treatments and doctor appointments on a weekly basis.

I love my mom and since my dad is gone, she needs my help more than ever. If you could point me in the direction of help, I would really appreciate it.
