Accident Disabled 41 Year Old Woman Seeks Grant For Nursing School

I was struck by a car in August of 1997, and it totally changed my life. My left leg was broken and almost torn off, and to this day I still have trouble walking. In fact, the majority of my on-going issues are related to the injuries received to my leg, such as how long I can sit or stand without the pain becoming unbearable. Not to mention the problems I have with balance and equilibrium now. The other injuries I received were as a result of head trauma that has caused me severe headaches, double vision and memory problems, both short-term and long-term. I deal with mental issues as a result of this accident that cause mood swings and depression because it has not been easy to accept that I am viewed as "different" or incapable of doing what use to be normal. I have back problems as a result as well and have been limited to lifting nothing heavier than a milk jug (per doctor’s orders). With these injuries and restrictions, getting or holding down a job has become almost impossible, as most jobs require physical labor and usually do not want the burden of making special accommodations just to have another employee. I was living in Tampa, Florida, at the time, and getting a job there had never been an issue prior to my accident. I moved to Newport, Tennessee, a few years back. But to no avail, I have had no luck. I am currently taking care of a 67-year-old man who has Muscular Dystrophy. Aubrey is my friend and companion so I do all that I can to help him. He's unable to take care of himself, or do daily activities. I am thankful my son and his fiancé live with me, as lifting Aubrey is not something I am able to do. While my disabilities limit my capabilities, it does not change my desire to help others. Taking care of Aubrey has sparked my long time dream of being a nurse. I feel that there has got to be something I can do to make my dreams happen. I want to go to college and establish an academic background so that potential employers will see my determination and may be more likely to give me the chance I need to make this happen. If I were to receive a grant, I feel that this would help give me the advantage I so need to move forward, as I do not have any income that could otherwise help me accomplish my goals and dreams.
