65 Year Old Disabled Widow Of Veteran Seeks Money For Child Or Elder Care

by Mary Mitchell-Armour
(Muskegon, MI, USA)

I am a 65-year-old, disabled widow of a deceased, disabled veteran. I went back to college in my 50s to get a BS in business.

I needed only six credits to graduate when my husband became ill. After he died, I have been trying to get funding in order to reach my goal.

Because I still owe on my student loans, I am unable to receive any more funds. VA told me that I am not eligible for GI Bill money since my husband's death was not service-connected.

Since I am also disabled, the only jobs I have been able to obtain are part-time at minimum wage. I used to do home health care and house cleaning, but I can't do them any more because of my physical limitations.

I would love to open a day care for children or an elder care for senior citizens or a combination of both. I have experience in both.

There are some people available for hire once I get through all the required paperwork and find a place.

Congratulations on making the effort to submit your story to Accessible.org.

With the publication of your story, you are now well on your way to:

1. Getting your story known to a wide audience that could help you.

2. Getting your story polished up and presentable so you can submit it elsewhere, including the White House.

As a disabled person myself, I can sympathize with your situation and I definitely understand your need for help.

I've done a bit of research and found these resources for you:

Veteran Family Member Benefits
http://www4.va.gov

Veteran Affairs:
http://veterans.house.gov/benefits/

State Veterans Affairs Offices
http://www.va.gov/statedva.htm

Others reading your story may be able to contribute more.

In any case, please let us know if they've been helpful to you.

Good luck!
