51 Year Old Disabled Woman Seeks Government Housing Grant After Eviction

I am a 51-year-old woman who is permanently and legally disabled and living in Slidell, Louisiana. I struggle with numerous disabilities that affect my mobility, speech, and motor skills.

My particular health problems include Type II Diabetes, Hashimoto's Disease, Hepatitis C, Tricuspid Regurgitation (leaky heart valve), Poly Arthritis, and Multifocal Dystonia.

My medical care/Rx's have taken a real toll on our finances, and consequently, our home was foreclosed on April 28, 2010. I reside with my husband, who has lost his job, and he also has some physical limitations.

He is a graduate of New Orleans Theological Seminary and is a licensed Baptist Minister. He donates his time at our church assisting with the praise music program there.

I donate two days a week to a local organization called STARC (St. Tammany Association for Retarded Citizens) and assist with their art and music therapy programs.

For now, we are still residing at our home awaiting the eviction process. Currently, our only income is my $800 disability payment. Unfortunately, I have found that being disabled doesn't count for anything when applying for food stamps, or Medicaid.

I've been told that I make "too much money" to qualify for any of those benefits, yet I don't make enough money to qualify for an apartment either. I have a lot of medical equipment that is necessary for my daily life, and I'm concerned as to where we'll go once we are formally evicted.

As I have a hospital bed, we'll need at least two bedrooms. I've checked with HUD and they do not have any housing vouchers available at this time... so frustrating!

I have worked very hard through the years supporting two children in the process. Now, I no longer can work and earn my own money, as I did in the past.

I can't drive due to my disability and must depend on my husband to take me to my numerous doctor appointments and my volunteer work. Our vehicle is on its "last legs," so it's a little temperamental at times!

I am seeking any assistance, donations or grants to help with the costs of moving and acquiring an apartment or home to rent.

One organization has already pledged to pay our first month's rent. Any donation would be greatly appreciated to help us transition to a new residence.

We would prefer to stay in Slidell as our church, volunteer work, and my doctors are located here. We remain prayerful and hopeful, knowing God will provide.
