50 Year Old Disabled Single Mom Seeks Government Housing Grant For Self And Son

by Rebecca Fiallos
(Tampa, Florida, USA)

My son Gab and me

My son Gab and me

I am a 50-year-old single mom. I was in a relationship that that drove me to Major Depression Disorder, Anxiety Disorder and Social Phobia.

I managed to move out and find a job but was unable to maintain the job because of my mental health.

I applied for Social Security Disability in the hope that I could provide for my son. It has been three years since I applied and I'm now appealing my case, which can take another year.

I was evicted and then forced to move into my ex-spouse's house again because I had no other way out.

I am back into the same situation that drove me into my depression in the first place. My conditions have worsened over time. I now have Fibromyalgia and Osteoarthritis, and am completely disabled.

The house where we are living in now is in foreclosure and I must find a place to move ASAP before we are served with an eviction notice.

My ex is looking for a place to live and I need to move before this happens. I have applied for ALL government help out there and it all comes down to the same thing, "I have no reliable income and not eligible for this reason."

Shelters do not accept us because my son is 17 years old. My son has applied for many jobs, but has not yet been called from any of them.

He has applied to HCC in Tampa Florida in hopes of continuing his education. I have to provide a secure and healthy environment for him to do so.

He has struggled and surpassed beyond all our problems and aspires to do good in his life. It is my job to make sure this happens. He is all that matters in my life.

We are about to be homeless and have no way out. It always seems to end up on a dead-end street.

I am a professional and have had my share of excellent jobs, so why are we homeless and about to live on the streets?

We are falling through the cracks and no one seems to care or help.

I have proudly served society and was almost sure I lived in the United States of America, the land of opportunity. What's up with that?

Disabled Help
by: Luis

Sorry to hear what's happening to you. I totally understand what you're going through. Around 5 years ago I got hurt and was unable to work. For the life of me I would have never thought that I would lose so much because I was ill and couldn't work.

I lost my home, my job, my car and all my gold that meant so much to me. I didn't understand why no one could help me. I use to say "Hey I'm an American" I've worked all my life and now I need help. To my surprise there was no one out there to help me. I stayed with a friend and I would sell what little I had left in order to pay rent. I went over to Tampa Housing to see if they would help, the places they sent me to (projects) were so scary I wouldn't even leave my dog there for 1 night.

The only place that looked at my application was this Building on Morgan Street in Tampa. I spoke with the manager and she said the building was for disabled people but if I could prove that I was disabled with a note from my doctor, even if I wasn't approved by the state for SSA she would let me rent an apartment there.

I'm happy to say that I got better and was able to go back to work. But it's always on my mind, What if I get sick again? Who will help me? What will I do? It's sad to know there are people like us looking for a place to live and not getting any help after working all our lives and paying taxes. Then when we need it, there is no one out there who could help.

I pray that it all works out for you. Try looking for this building. It looks like a nice place. It's low-income housing. It's downtown Tampa. I think Tampa Street or Morgan. Look for a small building of 5 or so storeys.
