48 Year Old Disabled Woman Seeks Housing Grant Money For Accessible Home

by Susan Pollard
(Boise, Idaho, USA)

I'm a 48-year-old woman that was injured in a car wreck on June 29, 1979 at the age of 17. I'm looking for housing grant money for an accessible home.

To make a long story short, I was thrown out the passenger's side window and landed on my back in the street. I broke my back in five places, bruised my spinal cord, heart, lungs and ribs, and I split my head open.

My memory was affected somewhat by it. In those days they couldn't treat a spinal cord injury the way they can today, no matter how severe. Nowadays if you bruise your spinal cord you would probably walk. But not in '79.

In the last few years I have developed a condition called Autonomic Dysreflexia, which affects the autonomic system. I never know from one day to the next how I will feel, so I can't work.

I'm looking for any government grant that could help me monthly. I live in the state of Idaho, and this state is the worst in the US for assistance for helping the disabled or Health and Welfare.

I can get no state money at all to help me live. All I live on is from Social Security and that is $926 month and that is with my daughter's Social Security also, but she will turn 18 next year and I will lose that.

I have to live with my elderly parents because I can't afford to live on my own. They are in their 80s and I am afraid for what the future holds for my daughter and myself.

I am hoping to work out of my home, so I have been taking Web Design courses to be able to do that in the future.

If anyone could help me find some housing grant money for an accessible home, I would really appreciate it.
