43 Year Old Disabled Man Seeks Help To Avoid Dying From Liver Failure

by Mary Eberwein
(Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA)

Bill, knowing he will never see his grandson grow up.

Bill, knowing he will never see his grandson grow up.

My husband is 43 and is dying from liver failure. I'm looking for grant money or other assistance to save his life.

He is on the transplant list for a new liver, but we have to have $10,000 for medicines after the surgery to make sure his body doesn't reject the liver.

Without the money upfront they will not do the surgery. It is heartbreaking to sit with this man after 25 years and watch him die.

We have five children, four under the age of 18. Our smaller children don't really understand that he may never get better.

I have just been laid off work due to lack of work. We can barely pay the bills, so there is no money left to put back for his liver transplant.

I would love to be able to tell him that there is hope but as of right now we don't see any.

Second opinion out there?
by: Anonymous

My friend is 29 and is too sick for a liver transplant. I am curious if there are physician groups who can give another opinion?

Transplant List
by: Anonymous

My brother was told he needs $250,000 before he can even get his name on the transplant list. And a cousin who needs one and they want $300,000 for her before she can get it.

Super!
by: Katina from Accessible.org

Good news he received the liver transplant! I know you are still in need of a lot of support to get the medical bills paid, and for continued medical care for him.

Thank you for the update.

Keep up the great work. It takes a lot of strength to care for a loved one.

Have you ever considered starting a blog online about the process of waiting for a life saving transplant, maybe to get others thinking about becoming organ donors? You could place advertisements on your blog, such as Google Ad Words, Amazon book ads, Click Bank Ads, Contra, and even eBay ads. It may also help him to write about what he has had to go through.

We're praying for him everyday, and for you!

Transplant News
by: Mary

His liver is doing well as of now. It's all the pain that he's still in that has him down. He still has a lot of fluid on his body. He was very close to death when he got the transplant. I have not heard anything from the newspaper yet. The bills we are recieving are unbelievable, but still well worth it.

How is he doing?
by: Katina from Accessible.org

Mary,

How is he doing?

Any luck with contacting the local newspapers or listing added?

Please let us know how things are going. We'll be here for your family.

Sincerely,

Katina from Accessible.org

I contacted your local newspaper and told them about your story. Have they contacted you? If not, I would give them a call. Emails and letters may get lost.

Transplant
by: Mary

Great news, we got the transplant on April 18th. He is taking to liver just great. Now all we have to worry about is the $300,000+ that the insurance didn't pay and the meds. But I guess that's just a minor setback. We will take that one day at a time. All that matters is that he got the transplant...

Medication Help -->
by: Anonymous

I found a website this evening that list several organizations that provide medication, and assistance for transplant patients.

Needy Meds for Transplant Patients, Chronic, or Terminal Illnesses, Children, and Adults (Nationwide assistance).

Another thing I would do is to submit your story and photo to the local newspapers and even television stations. With the current political debates over health care reform in the US, the story may have a good chance in being promoted. If it is, maybe they could help your family raise funds.

Don't give up, it may take a lot of legwork, but there are people that care.

Please keep us updated on Bill's condition. We've been thinking about him and your family.

God bless,

Sincerely,

Katina from Accessible.org

Thank you Katina. I will try those things. They told us that we have to have a percentage of the money before he is put on the active transplant list. So until we get it we just have to sit hear and watch him dying. It's heartbreaking... Mary Eberwein

Have you contacted...
by: Katina

I was going to wait until I found some concrete links for you but couldn't wait for posting my comment. I feel for you and your family so much. I cannot imagine how hard this must be for you to wait on a liver transplant, while still having to pay for every day living expenses.

Have you tried hub pages to list your story? It is one thing you could do to get the word out that your family needs help. As far as the grants are concerned, I would recommend calling the Red Cross and the National Center for Liver Disease.

Was he put on the transplant list?

Contacting the local churches and non-profit organizations in your area may be helpful as well. Ask them to help with a fundraiser, or write to the local newspaper (add the photo) with your article. If you have a person review your article before submitting it, or contacting a person from the local newspaper to come in and talk to them in person, that may help as well. It is much harder to deny a person getting a story in the paper, once they meet with you in person.

My heart really goes out to you.

I don't know if you like poetry or not, it's sort of my way to survive crises, and I?ve lived through some crises. Not as hard as the one you?re going through though.

Take care.
