39 Year Old Quadriplegic Female Seeks Grant Money Wheelchair Accessible Van

by Sheila
(Attalla, Alabama, USA)

I am a 39-year-old quadriplegic female. I had a wreck in 2004 and broke my neck at level c5 and c6.

I now have fluid built up in my spinal cord where the injury occurred therefore causing my nerve pain and spasms to be worse. Having surgery could cause me to be worse off than I am.

I am married to my high school sweetheart of 23 years and am the mother of two wonderful sons, 14 and 12.

My husband is also disabled due to a bone degeneration disease. He has had two hip surgeries and is diabetic and has high cholesterol and COPD.

We are on Social Security but it all goes on bills. I have a van with a lift, but it's an 88 model and is bad shape. The air doesn't work and the roof leaks very badly.

The lift works sometimes, but sometimes it don't. The tires are bad and I can't afford the repairs because by the time the bills and medications are paid there's nothing left.

We have missed several doctors' appointments and my husband was scheduled for a colonoscopy but we just haven't been able to afford the one hundred dollar co-pay.

My parents would help but are also in bad need. My mom has Stage 4 lung cancer and my dad has Parkinson's disease. My husband's parents have passed.

I am currently attending college to try and better myself, and my family. I want to succeed.

I Pray God Blesses You and Your Family.......
by: Linda

Sheila,

I am also on SSI, as I have C.O.P.D., and I qualify for Medicaid though Social Services. It covers the cost of you medical bills, doctors' visits, and the co-pay for each prescription is $2.

They will go back, it is either 3 or 4 months and cover those medical bills as well. I too have applied for a grant for a vehicle; if it is God's will I will be granted the grant.

Until then I have to use Share Advantage, it is my medical with the state, they provide cab rides to the doctors and pharmacy, and Shared Mobility takes me to dentists' appointments. My worker also authorized a ride to the grocery store once a week. God provides us the way I look at my situation, and I am extremely grateful.

I would rather be taking myself of course, as I'm sure you feel the same way. It is difficult without a vehicle, my three grandsons and their mom live with me, and I cannot even take the boys to the park, or anywhere for that matter. If I get my grant and we get a vehicle, then all I have to come up with is the tags, and insurance, which I believe I can handle with God's help of course.

All states have a Social Services or Health and Human Services it is called where I live. Check it out, and get some of the load off of you and your husband. It would work for you until you get your grant, and if you don't get the grant (which I cannot imagine why you wouldn't) it will continue to work for you until you can come up with another plan.

I sincerely hope this 411 helps you in a positive way, so you and your husband can make all of your doctor's appointments, and other medical appointments you may have.

I hope what I have shared has helped a little; actually I am praying it helps a lot. I will end this missive to you, May God Bless at God Speed as only God can do. It is with his grace we get through the really difficult times in our lives.

Take care, hang in there, I will add you and your family to my prayer list. I pray both of us are granted our grants so we can get on the business of living a fuller richer life while on God's green earth.

Sincerely,

Linda
