26 Year Old Disabled Single Mother Of Three Seeks Government Grant Money

by Tieshia Roberts
(Houston, TX, USA)

I am 26 years old. I have three kids. One is disabled with Down syndrome.

I was disabled myself in 2007 with a brain hemorrhage that left me in a coma for three weeks.

I don't have any financial support from my kids' father.

I am barely able to pay all my bills and support my kids with my disability check, and I don't have a car to take my kids to school.

It is very hard for me to do things like grocery shopping or taking my kids to the doctor.

I walk a lot since the bus does not run by my house. I am trying to get any kind of help I can for my kids and me.

Transporation information
by: Anonymous

If he gets SSI, he gets Medicaid, and this is a tip for transportation to a medical appointment. On the back of the Medicaid card, and many people don't even know this, there is a section that says transportation. Call this number and arrange a pick up from your location. A taxi will come and pick you up that Medicaid will pay. If you get a ride from somebody to drive you to a medical appointment, they will refund your trip but you must get someone from the doctor's office to verify your trip.

Got resources for you...
by: Katina

Thanks for sharing your story. I know what it is like to be "alone" with a disabled child. You sound like an incredible mom, and quite courageous I must add. :)

Have you tried the National Organizations for Children with Down syndrome?

There are several programs for help with children with medical handicaps. You can find many of them by contacting the nearest Children's Hospital in your area and asking to talk with someone in the Social Work Department. Ask for a printout of ALL resources available for handicap children and their families, in addition to activities, support groups and financial assistance/grants. This is a great place to look.

The United Way and Red Cross may also have some resources.

I'm sure you have looked in a lot of places already.

Here are some links I found that may be of some value for you:

Woman and Scholarships: Although, you?re probably not thinking about college with a disabled child to care for, I wanted to tell you about college scholarships for women who are "non-tradition" students, returning in adulthood. When and if you decide to further your education whether at a campus or online, you qualify for scholarships that are designated for returning moms! This is in addition to the Pell Grants, and FASFA -- type of financial assistance.

Proposal Writer -- Lots and Lots of GREAT links!!!
This is my favorite website to go today!

United Healthcare Children's Foundation.
"Qualifying families could receive up to $5,000 to help pay for medical services and equipment, such as physical and occupational therapy, prescriptions, wheelchairs and eyeglasses."

Please let us know if the links help in anyway.

*** Don't give up! ****

You're doing a great job, your children will thank you later :) God bless you and your family.

Sincerely,

Katina from Accessible.org
