24 Year Old Single Mom Seeks Housing Grant For Self And Blind Son

by Christina Reilly
(Petersburg, Michigan, USA)

I am a 24-year-old single female, raising a blind 5-year-old boy, all by myself. My 5-year-old son was born blind. I found out when he was about 3 months old.

His condition is called Septo-Optic Dysplasia. That means his optical nerve that goes from the back of the eye to the brain never developed.

There is no transplant or correctional surgery to fix it.

My blind son and I are living with my parents and sister. My mother has bipolar disorder and gets very violent at times, and cusses and screams.

It's not a good environment for my child and me to be in. I have been seeking to move out and find an apartment.

I have exhausted all possibilities trying to find some kind of assistance to help pay for rent.

I have been looking for a job for a year now, but it's hard because I can't just place my son in any regular daycare.

He is blind and a lot of daycare workers are not trained on how to take care of a blind child.

He receives SSI, but it's not enough to get us out of the violent living environment that we are now in.

I am looking for some kind of grant or assistance to help pay for rent.
