24 Year Old Male Quadriplegic Seeks Education Grant Money

by Ryan Voss
(Idaho, USA)

2005, when my injury took place. Me again, 2 years later.

My name is Ryan Voss. I'm 24 years old and have been a quadriplegic since 2005. Ever since I graduated high school in 2004, I have attempted to enroll in college multiple times.

In doing so, I ended up in the hospital for various reasons and wasn't able to attend. I continued to tell myself that I will get through college, no matter how many times I try.

At the beginning of 2010, as I was lying in the hospital, I buckled down and started taking online classes.

I wasn't sure how I would pay my tuition knowing I only receive $700 a month and live on my own.

I just knew I had to get through college so I can get back in the work force. I'm currently attending South University (online) pursuing my Associate's Degree in Information Technology.

I expect to graduate December 2011. My total tuition is roughly $14,000.

There is equipment I need due to my disability, but at this point in my life school is the most important to me.

Funding for College
by: sue wunder

Hey Ryan,

Wow! I can't believe your drive! My son is almost 22. He became a quadriplegic when he was 16, 5 summers ago. He now goes to Temple University in Philadelphia, majoring in film studies.

He took last semester off because of UTI but he did make the Dean's list the prior semester! He is halfway through his junior year and I couldn't be more proud.

He gets funding from the Division of Vocational Rehab. I am not sure if you have access to such a thing. He also has a Pell Grant and a Stafford Loan. Besides that, my community has had many fundraisers over the last 5 years to support him. A fundraiser is a great way to help with your tuition!

Our insurance wouldn't cover a full-time nurse so my husband quit his job and moved into a dorm room with my son. They come home on weekends. It's a crazy life right now, but it's flying by.

If you think being a quad is tough, my son says it's way more difficult to have your dad at college with you:) Anyway Ryan, keep on keeping on! I hope you reach your dream. Remember, you can do whatever you want to do!

Peace!
Sue Wunder
